She worked out on a Thursday that she did not know it was a Thursday. Somebody said have a good weekend and she said you too, automatically, and then stood in a corridor doing arithmetic.
Four on, three off, two nights, a day, a long one, a swap she agreed to in March that has propagated forward through the whole year. Her week does not start on a Monday and does not end on a Sunday. It does not start or end anywhere. It is a continuous surface with shifts printed on it.
She is thirty-six and she is good at the work and she is not complaining about the work. What she has noticed, and what has begun to frighten her slightly, is that she cannot remember most of this year. Not because anything is wrong with her memory. Because nothing is filed. There are no edges, and memory needs edges: a person remembers a thing by which week it was in, and if the weeks have no shape, the year comes out as one long smear with some very tired parts.
By Thursday, she has often said to people, I could not tell you where any of it went. She says it as a joke. It is not a joke.
Anybody whose work has eaten the shape of the week knows this. Shift workers, freelancers, parents of a newborn, anybody who has been ill for a long time. And I want to say at the very start that I am not going to hand anybody a system. No schedule. No planner. No method with a name. The last thing a person with no edges needs is a structure to fail at.
Who took responsibility for the rhythm
Let me put down a line and notice who is speaking and what He undertakes.
While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.Genesis 8:22
That is God, after the flood, making a promise about rhythm. And it is worth noticing what kind of promise it is. It is not advice about how to keep a rhythm. It is a commitment to maintain one, made by God, about the world.
Which means rhythm is not primarily a human achievement. It is a feature of a creation that somebody undertook to keep running, and a person living inside it is living inside somebody else's kept promise rather than manufacturing shape out of their own discipline.
You are living inside a rhythm God undertook to keep, and it has not ceased once during your worst month. That is not a nice thought handed to a woman who cannot remember a year. It is what is written in Genesis 8, and it is His Spirit who takes a written line and puts it into a break room at the turn of a shift. The shift pattern is a shift pattern. The rhythm is God's and it rests on a covenant.
And notice that the promise is not that the rhythm will be convenient. Day and night carry on whether or not she is asleep during either. What is promised is the continuing, not the fit.
You have days that are held in a rhythm you did not build and cannot break by working nights. Genesis 8:22 is where that is written, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes an old covenant land in a woman with a shift pattern printed out in her bag.
No system, and I mean that
Now the part this category exists for, and it needs to be said hard.
I am not going to give anybody a routine. Not a morning one. Not an evening one. Not a framework, not a set of anchors, not a method with a name and three parts.
Here is why, and it is not because systems are wicked. It is that a person whose weeks have no edges has almost certainly already tried three of them, and each one worked for eleven days and then a run of nights arrived and the whole structure collapsed and left behind a small deposit of failure. Four of those and a person stops trying, and the stopping is not laziness, it is a reasonable response to a repeated result.
So this article offers one thing. One. At the same time each day, small enough to survive a bad day, and here is the part that matters most: if it gets dropped, nothing has failed.
He hath made his wonderful works to be remembered.Psalm 111:4
Made to be remembered. There is a design in it. Somebody arranged for things to be markable, and a person marking a day is cooperating with something rather than inventing it.
You were put in a world designed to be markable, and one small marked thing works with the grain of it. Psalm 111:4 is the written word for it, and His Spirit is the one who makes one ordinary repeated act do what a planner could not.
You are held right now, in a week with no edges, and the holding does not depend on you giving it a shape. It is written that seedtime and harvest and day and night shall not cease, and it is the Spirit who makes that true in a woman who said you too, automatically, in a corridor.
If any of this ever turns dangerous, and staying safe genuinely comes into question, call or text a crisis line where you live, 988 in the United States, and tell a doctor plainly about the shifts and the memory and the tiredness. Rotating work does measurable things to a body and there are real people who help with it, and being held by God has never been a reason to go without one.
This is the turn, and it is not a schedule. It is a shift of weight, and it happens in a break room with the windows going pale.
For a year the arrangement has been: my life will have shape when my work stops eating it. This morning the order reverses. God keeps the rhythm, by covenant, and the shift pattern goes on being exactly what it is: four on, three off, a swap from March that has propagated all year and will not be undone by wanting it.
You are established this morning, in this break room, at the end of a shift you cannot name the day of. This is not me putting a kind opinion over anybody. Genesis 8:22 puts the maintaining of the rhythm on God and gives it no conditions, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes a written thing and makes it a standing thing in a person.
And the practical part is one item. Not a routine. One thing at the same hour, small enough to survive a bad day, offered as a gift. If it is dropped for a month, nothing has been failed, and I want that said louder than the suggestion itself. You have one small thing available to you this week, and it is a gift rather than a structure you can fall out of. The written word says day and night shall not cease, and it is the Spirit of God who makes that true in a body that has been on a continuous surface since January.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, feet flat on the floor. Not silently. The authority to speak to what stands in the way is not yours by nature and never was: it is written that you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the authority is His, delegated, carried in His name, and the Holy Spirit carries the word rather than the volume of your voice. What you speak to this morning is not the shift pattern and not the people who make it, because you have no authority over either. What you speak to is the belief that a shapeless year is a wasted one. Whatever He does with the shifts is His to do, and you leave the outcome with Him. Who keeps the rhythm is not up for negotiation.
- Week with no edges, you are a shift pattern, and you do not decide whether my days are held. Genesis 8:22 says seedtime and harvest and day and night shall not cease, and God said that about the world and not about my planner.
- Belief that a shapeless year is wasted, you have had my Thursdays since January, and today you are evicted in the name of Jesus. The Holy Spirit is the one who steadies me, and it is written that He has made His wonderful works to be remembered.
- Lord, You are the One who promised the rhythm would not cease, as it is written, and I thank You that You never made that promise conditional on anybody keeping a routine. There is one small thing to do at the same hour this week, and doing it is what I am doing.
