Her Day Belongs to Somebody Else

Her day is decided by another person's night. That is the mechanism, and once you see it there is nothing else to see.

If her mother slept, the morning is possible and there might be an hour somewhere in it. If her mother did not sleep, the day is a different day entirely, and it is decided before she opens her eyes, by something she was not present for and cannot influence.

She is forty-eight. This is year four. She gave up work in the second year and has stopped explaining that to people, because the explanations always end with somebody saying she is amazing and she has come to find that word almost unbearable.

What she has lost is not free time. She is careful about that, because free time sounds selfish and she will not use the phrase. What she has lost is the ability to intend anything. She cannot plan an hour. She cannot start something that needs two sittings. Every intention she forms is provisional on somebody else's body, and after four years of that, she has stopped forming them, and the stopping is what frightens her.

Anybody caring for somebody knows this exactly, and so does a parent of a newborn and so does anybody living with an unpredictable illness of their own. And I want to say straight away: I am not going to hand anybody a system. No routine, no self-care plan. A woman whose day is set by another person's night cannot keep a schedule and does not need one more thing that proves it.

A day's portion, by design

Let me put down a line and look at the last four words, which are the whole point.

Then said the LORD unto Moses, Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a certain rate every day, that I may prove them, whether they will walk in my law, or no.Exodus 16:4

A certain rate every day. And the chapter that follows makes it explicit: anybody who gathered extra found it did not keep. The daily portion was not a limitation of the delivery system. It was the design.

Which is worth sitting with, because a person whose life can only be lived a day at a time usually experiences that as a deficiency. Exodus describes it as the arrangement God chose for a whole nation for forty years, on purpose, and He did not consider it a lesser way to live.

You are living on a daily portion, and Scripture describes that as God's chosen arrangement rather than a failure of planning. That is not a nice thought handed to a woman in year four. It is what is written in Exodus 16, and it is His Spirit who takes a written line and puts it into a front room at eleven in the morning. The day belongs to another person's night. The portion is God's and it comes daily.

And notice one more thing: they gathered. There was something for them to do, and it was small, and it was the same thing every morning, and it did not include storing anything up for later.

You have a portion for today that was sent for today, and none of it required you to plan a week. Exodus 16:4 is where that is written, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes an old wilderness arrangement land in a woman who cannot start anything that needs two sittings.

Not being able to intend anything

Now the part this category exists for, and it is also the part nobody has named for her.

The loss here is not rest and it is not time. It is agency, in a very specific form: the ability to form an intention and expect it to survive contact with the day. That is a real loss, it is not selfish to name it, and it is much harder than tiredness.

And I want to say plainly that nobody is going to be told to carve out time. That advice assumes a day with give in it. Her day has no give in it, and being told to find some has done nothing over four years except add a small failure to each week.

So one thing, and here is the crucial design of it: it has to be a thing that can happen in a bad day as well as a good one, which means it has to be about ninety seconds long and it has to be something that does not require anybody else to cooperate.

Give us this day our daily bread.Matthew 6:11

The prayer He taught has a daily portion in it, and it does not ask for the week.

You were taught to ask for a day at a time by somebody who knew exactly what a day costs. Matthew 6:11 is the written word for it, and His Spirit is the one who lets a woman ask for today without apologizing for not planning further.

You are held right now, in this room, in a day that was decided by a night you did not sleep through. It is written that the portion came at a certain rate every day and that the extra did not keep, and it is the Spirit who makes that true in a woman in the fourth year of this.
