Built To LastIsaiah 58:12

He Planted a Tree He Does Not Own

This message is for to build something that lasts, for a man who planted a walnut on rented ground knowing he will almost certainly never sit in its shade

It is a walnut and it will not do anything worth looking at for about twenty years, and he is sixty-one, and the ground is not his.

He put it in on a Saturday in March in the corner by the old fence line where nothing else grows, and he staked it and mulched it and set up a bucket with a hole in it because that corner dries out, and the whole thing took him four hours.

The lease has seven years on it. After that it depends on people he has never met and a company that has been bought twice since he signed.

His son asked him about it, not unkindly, in the way sons do. Why put a walnut in there.

And he did not have an answer that would satisfy anybody, so he said something about the corner being no use for anything else, which is true and is not the reason.

Anybody who has done something that will not pay out in their lifetime knows this. And I want to be clear at the start: nobody in this article is going to be handed a legacy project, and nobody is going to be told that a person who leaves nothing visible has wasted a life. This site does not run that arithmetic and would not run it on him.

The name given to the repairer

Let me put down a line and notice who the name gets attached to.

And they that shall be of thee shall build the old waste places: thou shalt raise up the foundations of many generations; and thou shalt be called, The repairer of the breach, The restorer of paths to dwell in.Isaiah 58:12

Two names in that verse. Repairer of the breach. Restorer of paths to dwell in. And both of them are given to somebody working on things that were broken before they got there.

The foundations of many generations. Not his own foundations. He is described as raising up something that belongs to a line of people, most of whom are not born and some of whom are long dead, and he is not described as owning any of it.

You are named for what you repair rather than for what you hold the deed to. That is not a soft word for a man leaning on a fence. It is what is written in Isaiah 58, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a written line and puts it into a field edge in the late afternoon. The lease has seven years. The name is given for the work.

And notice where that verse sits. It is the end of a chapter about a fast God actually wants, and the whole chapter is about ordinary practical acts done for people who cannot repay: bread given, a person housed, a yoke undone. Isaiah is not describing philanthropy. He is describing the kind of thing a man does with four hours on a Saturday.

You have been doing exactly the work that chapter names, and none of it required a title deed. Isaiah 58:12 is where that stands, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes an old chapter land in a man who set up a bucket with a hole in it.

No project, and no verdict

Now the part this category exists for.

He is not being handed anything to build. He does not need a legacy plan at sixty-one and this article would be a burden rather than a help if it gave him one.

And nobody who leaves nothing visible has wasted a life. Not him, whatever happens to that corner. Not the men who worked that ground for forty years before him and whose names are on nothing. The arithmetic that measures a life by what survives it is a modern anxiety and it is not in the book.

I want to say what he actually did on that Saturday, because I think he does not know how to say it and his son certainly does not.

He acted as though the future were real. That is the whole of it. A man who plants a walnut he will not sit under is a man behaving as though there will be people here after him and as though they matter, and there is not a more practical statement of faith available anywhere.

He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water.Psalm 1:3

Notice the verb in that line is passive. Planted. Somebody else put it there.

You were planted by Somebody else before you ever planted anything, and the whole picture has always run in that direction. Psalm 1:3 is where that is written, and it is the Spirit of God who lets a man see that he was doing to a corner what was first done to him.

You are establishing something right now, on ground that is not yours, and the naming in that verse never once mentioned ownership. It is written that he shall be called the repairer of the breach and the restorer of paths to dwell in, and it is His Spirit who makes that true in a man of sixty-one with a seven-year lease.

If any of this ever turns dangerous, and staying safe genuinely comes into question, call or text a crisis line where you live, 988 in the United States, and tell a doctor or a counselor plainly what has been going through your head about the years ahead. Men who think in twenty-year timescales at sixty-one are usually thinking about more than a tree, and being named a repairer by God has never been a reason to sit with that alone at a fence.

The breakthrough

Here is the turn, and it is not a plan. It is a transfer of weight, and it happens leaning on a fence looking at a staked tree.

For a while the arrangement has been: things I do on this ground do not really count because the ground is not mine. This afternoon the order reverses. The names in Isaiah are given for repairing and restoring rather than for owning, and the lease goes on being exactly what it is: seven years, then somebody he has never met.

You are established this afternoon, at this fence, on ground that will belong to somebody else. I am not speaking my own comfort over anybody. Isaiah 58:12 hands out both names for work done on other people's broken things, and His Spirit is the one who takes a written thing and makes it a standing thing in a person.

And the practical part is exactly what he already did in March, which is the best thing about it. One thing today aimed past this year, on ground he does not own, with no expectation of sitting under it. A tree. A wall. A thing taught to a young man on a crew. You have one thing available today that points past you, and the deeds office has never once been involved. The written word says he shall be called the repairer of the breach and the restorer of paths to dwell in, and it is the Spirit who makes that true in a man who spent four hours on a Saturday in a corner nothing grows in.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, boots flat on the ground. Not silently. The authority to speak to what stands in the way is not yours by nature and never was: it is written that you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the authority is His, delegated, carried in His name, and the Holy Spirit carries the word rather than the volume of your voice. What you speak to this afternoon is not the company that owns the ground and not your son, who asked a fair question, because you have no authority over either. What you speak to is the rule that says work on borrowed ground does not count. Whatever He does with that corner is His to do, and you leave the outcome with Him. Which name gets given is not up for negotiation.

  1. Ground I do not own, you are a lease, and you do not decide whether what I plant stands. Isaiah 58:12 says a man is called the repairer of the breach and the restorer of paths to dwell in, and neither name mentions a deed.
  2. Rule that borrowed ground does not count, you have had that corner since March, and today you are evicted in the name of Jesus. The Holy Spirit is the one who steadies me, and it is written that a man is like a tree planted, and somebody else did the planting.
  3. Lord, You are the One who names a person for what they repair rather than for what they hold, as it is written, and I thank You that the whole chapter is about ordinary things done for people who cannot repay. There is one thing to do on this ground today, and doing it is what I am doing.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
