The Last One Who Remembers

He is the last one who knows which of the two boys in the photograph is which.

That is a small thing and it is also the whole of it. There are four people in that picture. Two of them are his uncles and they were twins and only one person alive can tell them apart, and he is seventy-eight, and when he goes it becomes a photograph of four strangers.

He knows a great deal more than that. He knows why the family left the town they left, and it is not the reason everybody says. He knows what his grandmother did in the war, which she told him once and never again and which is not in any record. He knows the name of a child who died at nine months in 1931 and is not on any stone.

There is nobody younger who has asked. That is not a complaint about anybody. His nephew is a decent man with a busy life. His great-nieces are teenagers and teenagers are not interested in 1931 and that is normal and correct.

And what sits with him, mostly in the late afternoon, is a thought he has not been able to put anywhere: that he is carrying something and that it is going to stop with him, and that there is no obvious mechanism by which it does not.

Anybody who is the last one who knows something knows this. And I want to say now: nobody in this article is going to be handed a legacy project, and nobody is going to be told that a person who leaves nothing visible has wasted a life. Neither of those is true and this article is not going to hand a man of seventy-eight a task.

Why He is not ashamed

Let me put down a line and notice the reason it gives.

But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city.Hebrews 11:16

The people being described there are Abraham and Sarah and the rest, and the chapter has just said that they died without receiving the promises and that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.

And the reason given for God not being ashamed of them is a piece of evidence about Him rather than about them: for He hath prepared for them a city. The proof is not what they built. It is what He built for them.

You are one of the people God has prepared a city for, and the evidence in that verse is entirely about what He did. That is not a nice thought handed to a man in front of a wall of photographs. It is what is written in Hebrews 11, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a written line and puts it into a front room in the late afternoon. The memory may stop. The city is prepared and it was always going to be.

And there is a second thing in that chapter that speaks directly to what he is carrying. It lists people. That is what Hebrews 11 mostly is: a list of names attached to very short descriptions, and a number of them have almost nothing said about them at all. Somebody remembered them. That is the entire mechanism by which they are in the book.

You have been doing what Hebrews 11 is made of, and remembering people is not a lesser form of building. Hebrews 11:16 is the line it rests on, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes an old list land in a man who knows which twin is which.

No project, and no task

Now the part this category exists for.

He is not going to be told to record it all. Somebody has probably suggested it, and it is not a bad idea, and it is also a project, and a project handed to a man of seventy-eight who is already carrying something can very easily become one more thing he is failing to do.

And nobody who leaves nothing visible has wasted a life. If not one of those stories ever gets told again, seventy-eight years of a man who carried them is not diminished by that, and the child who died in 1931 was known by God without any stone at all.

I want to say what he is actually doing, because I do not think anybody has said it to him.

He has been holding a family in his head for sixty years, without being asked, at no benefit to himself. That is a form of love with no name in English. It is what Hebrews 11 is made of and it is why we know any of those names.

And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament.Daniel 12:3

Nothing in that verse about being read afterward.

You were shining in the ordinary act of remembering people, and no reader was ever required for it. Daniel 12:3 is the text this sits on, and it is the Spirit of God who lets a man see the value of something that has no audience.

You are held right now, in this room, holding a family nobody has asked you about. It is written that God is not ashamed to be called their God because He prepared a city, and it is His Spirit who makes that true in a man of seventy-eight in front of a photograph of four people.

The thought that a thing stops with you is heavier than it sounds and it usually comes with other things attached, and being told a city is prepared has never been a reason to sit with it alone.
