The Names She Prays and Never Mentions

Eleven names, in the same order, every morning, for nine years, and not one of the eleven has any idea.

The order is not important and she could not tell you why it is fixed. Two are family. Three are people she used to work with. One is a woman she has never met whose situation she read about in a letter in a magazine in 2016. One is a doctor she saw twice. Two are neighbors. One is a man who was rude to her in a checkout line and stayed, somehow, on the list. The last one is her own.

She is sixty-seven. She has told nobody about this. Not from modesty exactly. It is that there is no natural sentence for it. You cannot say to a neighbor, by the way, I have prayed for you every morning since 2016, without it landing strangely.

And what she wondered, this week, sitting in a side chapel on a Tuesday with nothing else on, is whether it has done anything. Not whether God hears. She is not in doubt about that. Whether there is anything at the end of nine years of it, in any sense that could be pointed at.

Anybody who has done something faithfully and invisibly for years knows this question. And I want to say now: nobody here is going to be handed a legacy project, and nobody is going to be told that a person who leaves nothing visible has wasted a life. Both are lies, and if either were true it would be true of almost every praying woman in history.

Their works do follow them

Let me put down a line and notice which direction the works are described as traveling.

Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them.Revelation 14:13

Follow them. Not precede them, and not remain behind them as a monument. The picture is of the works traveling in the same direction as the person, which is a very strange image if you were expecting a legacy to be something left in a place.

And notice who says it. Yea, saith the Spirit, which is one of a very small number of places where the Spirit is quoted directly, and the thing He says is about ordinary labor and what happens to it.

You are doing work that is described as following you rather than staying behind for anybody to see. That is not a nice thought handed to a woman in a side chapel. It is what is written in Revelation 14, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a written line and puts it into a Tuesday morning with flowers on a ledge. The list is invisible. The works are described as traveling.

And the word for works there is the plain one for things done. It is not a special category of holy achievement. It covers a woman saying eleven names in a kitchen at seven in the morning.

You have nine years of ordinary things done that Scripture says are coming with you. Revelation 14:13 is the line it rests on, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes an old line about rest land in a woman on a plain chair.

No project, no measurement

Now the part this category exists for.

She is not going to be told to tell them. That is the obvious suggestion and it is not necessarily right and it is certainly not an instruction. Some of those eleven would be moved by it and some would be embarrassed by it and one of them would find it intrusive, and she knows which is which better than any article does.

And she is not going to be told to measure it. There is no way to measure it, there was never going to be, and the desire to measure it is not a flaw in her, it is what a person does after nine years of anything.

And nobody who leaves nothing visible has wasted a life. If the eleven names have produced nothing anybody could point at, the nine years are still nine years of a woman standing between people and God every morning, and the fact that this cannot be photographed is not evidence about it.

Verily I say unto you, In as much as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.Matthew 25:40

Notice the accounting in that verse. The person doing it did not know where it was going. That is the entire point of the passage: they are surprised.

You were never expected to be able to see where any of it went, and the people in that passage could not either. Matthew 25:40 is the text this sits on, and it is the Spirit of God who lets a woman stop needing an accounting she was never going to be given.

You are building right now, at seven in the morning, in something that follows rather than remains. It is written that their works do follow them, and it is His Spirit who makes that true in a woman with eleven names in a fixed order.
