Forty Years at One Address and Still Bracing

Forty-one years next month, in one house, on one road, and she has never once stopped listening for something.

She could not tell you what for. That is what makes it difficult to explain and why she has explained it to nobody. It is not burglars. It is not her husband, who was a good man and has been gone four years and was never anything to listen for. It is a state, and it is on, and it has been on the entire forty-one years, and she has been in a settled house the whole time.

She is seventy-four. Married at thirty-three, which was late for then, to a man who fixed things and did not go anywhere. Two children raised in that kitchen. A church three miles away with the same building for the whole of it. If you were listing the settled lives in that valley, hers would be near the top of the list.

And her insides never got the message. That is the only way she has ever been able to put it, in her own head, and she has never said it out loud to anybody in forty-one years.

What she would want said, if she were sitting here, is that she is not unhappy and she was not badly married and the house is not haunted. Nothing dramatic. Just an interior that has been braced since long before that road, and never stood down, and cannot now be talked out of it by any evidence.

Anybody with a settled exterior and a listening interior knows this. And I want to say now: nobody here is going to be told she is not really settled, and nobody is going to be told that forty-one years at one address makes the ache smaller. It does not. It makes it lonelier, because there is not one thing in the frame to point at.

Which of the two He reads

Let me put down a line and notice which half it says God is reading.

For the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.1 Samuel 16:7

That gets preached at people as a warning about judging by appearances, which is fair enough. But turn it round and it says something else entirely, and the something else is the whole point for a woman in a farmhouse kitchen.

Everybody in that valley has been reading her outward appearance for forty-one years and reading it correctly. One house. One marriage. Children raised. Nothing to remark on. And the one Person whose reading matters has, according to that verse, not been looking there at all.

You are read where the bracing actually is, and God has never once been assessing the address. That is not a soft word for a woman shelling beans. It is what is written in 1 Samuel 16, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes a written line and puts it into a kitchen on an ordinary morning. The outside is accurate. The heart is what He has been looking at the entire time.

And notice the context. God is choosing a king, and everybody present is reading the wrong data, and the correction is not a rebuke of the people looking. It is a statement about where God's attention is by nature.

You have been seen in the part that never settled, for every one of those forty-one years. 1 Samuel 16:7 is where that is written, and it is the Spirit of God who makes an old line about choosing a king land in a woman who listens for something she cannot name.

Nobody says she is not settled

Now the part this category exists for.

She is settled. That is not a fiction and this article will not treat it as one. The house is a real house and forty-one years is a real forty-one years and the life she built in it is not a facade over something else.

And that is why the second sentence matters more here than almost anywhere: an outwardly stable life does not make an interior ache smaller. It makes it harder to say, because every time she has come close to it, some part of her has produced the sentence about people who have real problems, and that sentence has ended the conversation every time for forty-one years.

I also will not tell her why. I do not know. It may be old and it may be constitutional and it may be something nobody has a word for, and she does not owe anybody an explanation as the price of being steadied.

He knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust.Psalm 103:14

Frame there is the word for how a thing is made. He is described as knowing the construction, which is a different kind of knowledge from knowing the facts about somebody.

You were made in a particular way and He knows the construction, and none of it has ever been held against you. Psalm 103:14 is the written word for it, and it is His Spirit who lets a person be known in the way they are built rather than judged by it.

You are held right now, in this kitchen, still listening for something at seventy-four. It is written that the Lord looks on the heart, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes that true in a woman whose insides never got the message.
