He worked out last week that the last day he did not work was the eleventh of February.
That is not a boast and he does not say it to anybody, because in his experience saying it makes people uncomfortable and then they say something about looking after yourself and the conversation ends badly for everybody. So he says the work is going well, which is also true.
Mornings at a warehouse. Afternoons driving. Four evenings a week at a restaurant, and the restaurant is the one he actually likes, because of the people out the back at the end of the night.
He is forty. There is a reason for all three and the reason is a family and a set of numbers that only works if all three are running. He is not going to be talked out of any of them by an article and I am not going to try.
What he has noticed, and cannot fix, is that the week is gone. Not busy. Gone. It has collapsed into a single continuous day that started some time in the winter and has not ended, and one day feels different from six days in a way he could not have predicted and cannot explain. His son asked him on Sunday what he had done that week and he could not separate any of it out.
Anybody working like this knows it. And I want to say at the start: I am not going to hand anybody a system, and I am not going to suggest he do less, because I do not know his numbers and telling a man with three jobs to slow down without knowing his numbers is not kindness, it is a comfortable person talking.
He said it while people were still arriving
Let me put down a line and pay careful attention to what was going on around it.
And he said unto them, Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat.Mark 6:31
Read the reason at the end of that verse. Not because the work was finished. Because there were many coming and going and no time even to eat. The demand was still fully live when He said it.
That matters enormously to a man with three jobs, because the usual version of rest is: get to the end, then stop. Jesus does not use that version. He says come apart while the crowd is still arriving, which means He is not describing a reward for finishing. He is describing something inserted into the middle of an unfinished situation.
You are invited into rest in the middle of an unfinished week rather than at the end of one. That is not a soft word for a man who last had a day off in February. It is what is written in Mark 6, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes a written line and puts it into a courtyard at eleven at night. The three jobs are three jobs. The invitation was issued mid-crowd.
And notice the size of it: rest a while. Not take a season. Not step back from everything. A while, which is a small and deliberately unimpressive quantity, and it is what was actually available.
You have been offered a while rather than a season, and a while has always been the size that fits an unfinished life. Mark 6:31 is the written word for it, and it is the Spirit of God who makes an old scene land among crates and string lights.
Nobody is going to tell him to do less
Now the part this category exists for, and it needs saying clearly.
I am not going to suggest he drop a job. That decision needs his numbers, his family, his rent and his own judgment, and none of those are visible from here. Anybody who tells a man in his position to simplify is usually a person who has never had to run three at once.
I am also not going to give him a routine, because the honest truth is that a routine cannot survive that schedule and building one would just add a fourth thing to fail at.
What I want to offer is smaller and it fits inside what he already has.
Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.Matthew 11:28
He is talking to people described by their labor. That is the address on the envelope. Not people with margin. People carrying.
You were addressed by name in that verse, and the address on it is exactly your working week. Matthew 11:28 is the line it rests on, and it is His Spirit who lets a man who cannot stop receive something that does not require stopping.
You are held right now, at the end of a shift, in a day that has been running since the winter. It is written that He told them to come apart and rest a while while people were still coming and going, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes that true in a man who could not tell his son what he did this week.
If any of this ever turns dangerous, and staying safe genuinely comes into question, call or text a crisis line where you live, 988 in the United States, and tell a doctor plainly how long it has been since a day off. A body running like this for months has real risks that a person cannot see from inside it, and being held by God has never been a reason to skip a real conversation with a real person.
Here is the turn, and it is not a suggestion to work less. It is a transfer of weight, and it happens on an upturned box at eleven at night.
Since February the arrangement has been: I will rest when the numbers allow it. Tonight the order reverses. He said come apart and rest a while while the crowd was still arriving, and the three jobs go on being exactly what they are, because a family depends on all three and that is not a thing an article gets to touch.
You are established tonight, in this courtyard, at the end of a day that started in the winter. I am not speaking my own comfort over anybody. Mark 6:31 puts the invitation in the middle of the demand, and it is the Spirit who takes a written thing and makes it a standing thing in a person.
And the practical part is one item and it fits inside what he has. One small thing at the same hour, inside the day he is already working. Not less work. Not a rearrangement. One while, at a fixed time, and if it disappears for a week nothing has failed. You have twenty minutes somewhere in tomorrow that could have an edge on it, and taking it is not laziness. The written word says come apart and rest a while, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that true in a man who has not had a day since the eleventh of February.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, feet flat on the ground. Not silently. The authority to speak to what stands in the way is not yours by nature and never was: it is written that you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the authority is His, delegated, carried in His name, and the Holy Spirit carries the word rather than the volume of your voice. What you speak to tonight is not any of the three employers, because you have no authority over them and do not need it. What you speak to is the rule that rest comes after the finishing. Whatever He does with the numbers is His to do, and you leave the outcome with Him. When the invitation was issued is not up for negotiation.
- One long day, you are a stretch of hours where a week used to be, and you do not decide whether I am held. Mark 6:31 says come apart and rest a while, and He said it while people were still coming and going.
- Rule that rest comes after finishing, you have had my year since February, and tonight you are evicted in the name of Jesus. The Holy Spirit is the one who steadies me, and it is written that the laboring and the heavy laden are the ones invited to come.
- Lord, You are the One who told them to rest a while in the middle of the crowd, as it is written, and I thank You that the size of it was a while and never a season I cannot afford. There are twenty minutes tomorrow with an edge on them, and taking them is what I am doing.
