There was never a last one. That is the part she keeps coming back to.
If somebody had said, at the end of a session, this is the final Tuesday and thank you all, she thinks she would have been all right. There would have been a thing to be sad about and then it would have been over.
What happened is that the woman who ran it had a hip operation in the autumn, and it was canceled for a few weeks, and then it was Christmas, and then in January somebody said they would see about restarting it, and that was fourteen months ago.
She is seventy-three. She has friends. This is not an article about a woman with nobody, and she would be annoyed at being cast that way.
But Tuesday was the fixed point. Everything in her week hung off it. Monday was the day before, and Wednesday was the day after, and the rest arranged itself around a hall and a tea urn and eleven women, and now there is no Tuesday and the week has quietly come apart.
She has not told anybody, because how would she say it. Nobody died. Nothing happened. A thing stopped, gradually, and that is not a sentence you can take to anybody.
Anybody whose week hung off one thing knows this exactly. And I want to say now that I am not going to hand anybody a system. No plan for filling a week. A woman who has lost the pin in her week does not need a schedule to fail at, and being told to join something is not what this is.
Morning and night, and both of them His
Let me put down a line and note the two ends it puts on a day.
To shew forth thy lovingkindness in the morning, and thy faithfulness every night.Psalm 92:2
Two fixed points, and neither of them is an event anybody organizes. The loving kindness in the morning. The faithfulness every night. That is a day with something at each end of it, and both ends belong to God.
And notice the title of that psalm, which is one of the few in the book with an occasion attached: A Psalm or Song for the sabbath day. It is a psalm about a fixed point in a week, and what it does is put two fixed points in every single day underneath it.
You are living in days that already have something at both ends, and neither end was ever organized by a committee. That is not a nice thought handed to a woman with a fourteen-month hole in her week. It is what is written in Psalm 92, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes a written line and puts it into a hall on a bright morning. The Tuesday is gone. The two ends of every day are God's.
And the word for faithfulness in that verse is about reliability over time, which is exactly the quality that stopped being available when a thing quietly ended without ending.
You have a faithfulness available every night that has never once been canceled or postponed. Psalm 92:2 is where the word puts it, and it is the Spirit of God who makes an old sabbath song land in a woman who has stopped knowing what Wednesday is for.
A thing that stopped without stopping
Now the part this category exists for, and it is mostly about naming.
There is a specific grief for something that ended without an ending, and it has almost no social recognition, which is why she has not told anybody. There is no card for a group that faded. There is no occasion. And so a real loss goes unmarked, and unmarked losses do not get smaller, they get quieter.
I want to say plainly: this is a loss. Fourteen months of one, and it deserves to be called that rather than tidied into being a bit of a shame.
And I am not going to tell her to start something. That advice is handed to older people constantly and it is not always wrong, but it puts the entire weight of a week on a seventy-three-year-old and then congratulates her for carrying it.
Even to your old age I am he; and even to hoar hairs will I carry you.Isaiah 46:4
Carry, in that verse. Not encourage to carry.
You were carried before that Tuesday started and you have been carried through all fourteen months without it. Isaiah 46:4 is where that stands, and it is His Spirit who lets an older woman be carried rather than told to organize something.
You are held right now, on this morning, in a week that has quietly come apart. It is written that the loving kindness is showed in the morning and the faithfulness every night, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes that true in a woman who never got a last Tuesday.
If any of this ever turns dangerous, and staying safe genuinely comes into question, call or text a crisis line where you live, 988 in the United States, and tell a doctor plainly what fourteen months without a fixed point has been like. Loneliness of this kind has real effects that are worth a real conversation, and being carried by God has never been a reason to have it alone.
Now the turn, and it is not an instruction to join something. It is weight changing hands, and it happens in a hall on a bright morning.
For fourteen months the arrangement has been: my week had a shape and somebody else was holding it. This morning the order reverses. The loving kindness is in the morning and the faithfulness is every night, and both of those belong to God, and the Tuesday goes on being exactly what it is: gone, unannounced, and not coming back on its own.
You are established this morning, in this hall, in a week that lost its pin fourteen months ago. I am not laying my own encouragement over anybody. Psalm 92:2 puts the two ends of a day in God's hands, and it is the Spirit who takes a written thing and makes it a standing thing in a person.
And the practical part is one item, and it is small, and it is nobody else's to cancel. One thing at the same hour, chosen by her, that does not depend on a hall, a volunteer or a committee. If she drops it for a month nothing has failed, and if nothing at all comes of it, it has still done the work. You have one small fixed point available this week that no committee can quietly stop. The written word says the faithfulness is every night, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that true in a woman who has not told a soul about the Tuesdays.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, feet flat on the floor. Not silently. The authority to speak to what stands in the way is not yours by nature and never was: it is written that you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the authority is His, delegated, carried in His name, and the Holy Spirit carries the word rather than the volume of your voice. What you speak to this morning is not the woman who had the operation and not anybody who meant to restart it, because they did nothing wrong and you have no authority over them. What you speak to is a loss that nobody let you name. Whatever He does with the coming year is His to do, and you leave the outcome with Him. Who holds the two ends of a day is not up for negotiation.
- Tuesday that stopped, you are an absence, and you do not decide whether my days are held. Psalm 92:2 says His loving kindness is showed in the morning and His faithfulness every night, and neither of those was ever on a hall's calendar.
- Loss nobody let me name, you have had my weeks for fourteen months, and today you are evicted in the name of Jesus. The Holy Spirit is the one who steadies me, and it is written that even to gray hairs He carries and He bears.
- Lord, You are the One whose faithfulness comes every night, as it is written, and I thank You that it has never once been postponed or quietly not restarted. There is one small thing to keep at the same hour this week, and keeping it is what I am doing.
