The young man will be extremely good at this in about four years and nobody will ever ask who taught him.
That is not bitterness. He wants that clear, and if you met him you would believe it, because he is not a bitter man and has never been one. It is an observation, made at the end of a Friday, sitting on an upturned crate with a cold coffee, watching a twenty-three-year-old do a thing correctly that took him eleven years to learn and took the boy about nine months because somebody showed him.
He is fifty-eight. He has taught perhaps fourteen people over thirty years. Two of them run their own yards now. One of them is genuinely better than he ever was, which he takes an unmixed pleasure in, and which he mentioned once at a family thing and could see nobody understood.
None of them say his name. That is not their fault either. Nobody knows who taught anybody. When you look at a good piece of work you see the person who did it, and behind that person there is nobody visible at all, and that is simply how skill travels.
Anybody whose whole contribution disappears into somebody else's competence knows this. And I want to say now: this article is not handing out a legacy project, and nobody is going to be told that a person who leaves nothing with their name on it has wasted a life. That arithmetic would delete most of the useful people who have ever lived.
The shining, and who does it
Let me put down a line and notice how long it is described as lasting.
And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever.Daniel 12:3
For ever and ever. That is the duration attached to the ones who turn many, and it is worth noticing that turning many is a transfer rather than a construction. Nothing is built in that sentence. Something moves from one person into others.
And there is nothing at all in it about attribution. The shining is a description of the person, not of a monument with their name on it, and the length of it is set at forever, which is considerably longer than anybody's reputation in a boatyard.
You are described as shining rather than as being credited, and the duration on it is forever. That is not a nice thought handed to a man on an upturned crate. It is what is written in Daniel 12, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a written line and puts it into a boatyard with the light going off the water. The credit goes to the boy. The shining is a different category entirely.
And it is worth noting what Daniel is looking at when he writes it. The whole chapter is about a very long time and about people who are asleep in the dust, which is to say he is deliberately taking the longest possible view, and from that distance nobody's attribution is visible anyway.
You have been put in a category that is measured in forever rather than in who gets named. Daniel 12:3 is the line it rests on, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes an old and strange chapter land in a man watching a twenty-three-year-old do a good job.
No project and no scoreboard
Now the part this category exists for.
He is not going to be told to write a manual, start an apprenticeship scheme, or make sure his contribution gets recorded somewhere. He does not need a project. He needs, if anything, to be told that the thing he has been doing for thirty years was the thing, and that the invisibility of it was never a defect in the arrangement.
And nobody who leaves nothing with their name on it has wasted a life. Not him, and not the man who taught him, whose name he says out loud maybe twice a year and who nobody else in that yard has heard of.
I want to name the actual mechanism, because I think he has never seen it stated.
Skill travels by being given away, and it can only travel that way, and the giving is invisible by design rather than by accident. If it were visible it would be a monument, and monuments do not travel.
Freely ye have received, freely give.Matthew 10:8
Received and given, both freely, and there is no ledger anywhere in that sentence.
You were handed something freely and you have been handing it on the same way, and no ledger was ever opened. Matthew 10:8 is the text this sits on, and it is the Spirit of God who lets a man see the mechanism he has been running for three decades.
You are building right now, in a boatyard, into a man who will be credited with all of it. It is written that they that turn many shall shine as the stars for ever and ever, and it is His Spirit who makes that true in a man who has taught fourteen people and been named by none of them.
If any of this ever turns dangerous, and staying safe genuinely comes into question, call or text a crisis line where you live, 988 in the United States, and tell a doctor or a counselor plainly what the end of a Friday is like at fifty-eight. Men at that point in a working life carry a specific weight that almost nobody asks about, and being told you shine forever has never been a reason to sit with it alone on a crate.
Here is where it turns, and it is not a scheme. It is the weight moving, and it happens on an upturned crate with a cold coffee.
For thirty years the arrangement has been: what I do disappears into other people, so it does not really count as mine. This evening the order reverses. What God establishes through a person is described as shining forever and never as being credited, and the boy goes on being exactly what he is: extremely good, in four years, and entitled to every bit of the credit.
You are established this evening, in this yard, watching somebody else do your work better than you did. None of this is my own comfort spoken over anybody. Daniel 12:3 puts the duration at forever and says nothing at all about attribution, and His Spirit is the one who takes a written thing and makes it a standing thing in a person.
And the practical part is exactly what he already does on a Friday. One thing today aimed past this year. Show the boy the next thing. And, if it is in you, say the name of the man who taught you while you do it, which is the only ledger the mechanism has ever had. You have one thing to hand over today, and the credit going elsewhere is the design rather than the loss. The written word says freely you have received and freely give, and it is the Spirit who makes that true in a man who has been named by none of the fourteen.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, boots flat on the ground. Not silently. The authority to speak to what stands in the way is not yours by nature and never was: it is written that you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the authority is His, delegated, carried in His name, and the Holy Spirit carries the word rather than the volume of your voice. What you speak to this evening is not the young man, who is a person and has done nothing wrong, and not anybody who never asked who taught him. What you speak to is the sentence that says invisible work does not count. Whatever He does with those fourteen is His to do, and you leave the outcome with Him. What the duration is is not up for negotiation.
- Credit going elsewhere, you are an attribution, and you do not decide what I have built. Daniel 12:3 says they that turn many shall shine as the stars for ever and ever, and there is not one word about names in it.
- Sentence that invisible work does not count, you have had my Fridays for thirty years, and today you are evicted in the name of Jesus. The Holy Spirit is the one who steadies me, and it is written that freely I have received and freely I give, and no ledger was ever opened.
- Lord, You are the One who set the duration at forever and never mentioned attribution, as it is written, and I thank You that skill can only travel by being given away and that the giving is invisible by design. There is one thing to hand over today and one name to say while I hand it, and doing that is what I am doing.
