Deciding From RestIsaiah 41:10

The Sentence She Has Not Said

This message is for somewhere fixed enough to decide from, for a woman rehearsing one true sentence in the car that somebody she loves is going to be hurt by hearing

She has said it out loud in the car eleven times, at least, and it comes out differently every time, and she has never once said it to the person it is for.

It is not an accusation. That is what makes it hard to explain. It is not something anybody did wrong. It is a true thing about her that will land in somebody she loves as a piece of information they will not enjoy having, and it will change something, and once it is said it cannot be taken back into her mouth.

She has done the version that is gentle and it sounded evasive. She has done the version that is direct and it sounded cold. She has done a version with an apology at the front and heard herself apologizing for being true, and she has sworn off that one.

She is forty-two. She has been carrying this for about seven months, and the carrying has changed the shape of ordinary time with that person. She is warm and careful and slightly further away in every conversation, and the other person has noticed something, because people do, and has attributed it to something else.

Anybody rehearsing something in a car knows exactly this. And I am going to say at the start that I am not going to tell anybody whether to say it. I do not know what it is. There are true things that should be said and true things that should not, and anybody who hands out a rule about that from a distance has never actually been in the car.

Upheld, by a specific hand

Let me put down a line and notice which hand is named in it.

Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.Isaiah 41:10

Five promises stacked, and the last one is the strangest and the most useful. Uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness. Not with a hand. With that hand, specifically, the one belonging to His own rightness.

Which means the holding is not attached to the quality of what she does next. If she says it badly, that hand does not move. If she says it well, it was not the reason it was there.

You are upheld by the hand of His righteousness rather than by getting this right. That is not a soft word for a woman who has rehearsed eleven versions. It is what is written in Isaiah 41, and it is His Spirit who takes a written line and sets it beside somebody walking a park path. The sentence is a sentence. The hand is His and it is not conditional.

And notice what He does not say in that verse. He does not say the thing you are afraid of will not happen. Four of those five promises are about His presence and His action and none of them is a prediction about the outcome.

You have five promises about who is with you and not one prediction about how this goes, and that was deliberate. Isaiah 41:10 is where that is written, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes an old promise land in a woman under moving leaves.

Seven months of rehearsal is not dishonesty

Now the part this category exists for.

She is not being dishonest and I want that settled before anything else. Not saying a true thing yet is not the same as lying. A person who is taking seven months over something because it will land on somebody she loves is not a coward, she is careful, and carefulness in this direction is a form of love that almost never gets credited as one.

And I am not going to tell her to say it. Not with a story where the truth-teller is obviously braver. Not with a line about how honesty always heals. I do not know what it is. There are sentences that need saying and sentences that need never to be said and the difference is not something an article can determine from here.

But there is one thing I will name, because it is the part that has been quietly costing her.

The rehearsing is not preparation any more. Somewhere around month four it stopped being preparation and became a way of carrying it, and the carrying has already changed the friendship, which means the thing she has been protecting has been shifting anyway.

Let your yea be yea; and your nay, nay.James 5:12

Notice James does not tell anybody what to say. He talks about the weight of a yes and a no, and the whole point is simplicity rather than volume.

You were never asked to produce a perfect version, and eleven rehearsals have never been what makes a sentence true. James 5:12 is the written word for it, and His Spirit is the one who takes the pressure off the wording and leaves the substance where it is.

You are held right now, on this path, with the sentence still unsaid and seven months behind you. It is written that He upholds with the right hand of His righteousness, and it is the Spirit who makes that true in a woman who has sworn off the version with the apology at the front.

If any of this ever turns dangerous, and staying safe genuinely comes into question, call or text a crisis line where you live, 988 in the United States, and talk to a counselor or a doctor about what you are carrying and what saying it would cost. A sentence this heavy deserves a real person in the room before it is ever said to the person it is about, and being upheld by God has never been a reason to skip that.

The breakthrough

Here is the turn, and it is not permission and it is not a warning. It is a transfer of weight, and it happens walking under trees in the late afternoon.

For seven months the arrangement has been: I will be steady when I know whether to say it and how. This afternoon the order reverses. God upholds with the right hand of His righteousness, and the sentence goes back to being what it always was: a true thing, still unsaid, that has to be handled with care and is not currently holding anybody up.

You are established this afternoon, on this path, with eleven versions in your car and none of them said. I am not speaking my own comfort over anybody. Isaiah 41:10 puts the upholding on His own righteousness and makes no prediction about the outcome, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes a written thing and makes it a standing thing in a person.

And the practical part is not the conversation. It is one small piece, done today, that decides nothing. Say the sentence out loud once to somebody it is not about, or write it on paper in its plainest form, without the apology and without the softening. You have one small piece available today, and doing it says nothing to the person it is about. The written word says He upholds with the right hand of His righteousness, and it is the Spirit of God who makes that true in a woman who has been warm and careful and slightly further away since the spring.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, feet flat on the ground. Not silently. The authority to speak to what stands in the way is not yours by nature and never was: it is written that you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the authority is His, delegated, carried in His name, and the Holy Spirit carries the word rather than the volume of your voice. What you speak to this afternoon is not the person this is about, because they are a person and you never speak over a person's will, and nothing here is aimed at them. What you speak to is the requirement to have it perfectly worded first. Whatever He does with that friendship is His to do, and you leave the outcome with Him. Whose hand is holding you is not up for negotiation.

  1. Sentence in my mouth, you are a set of words, and you do not decide whether I am held. Isaiah 41:10 says He upholds me with the right hand of His righteousness, and that hand has been there through all eleven rehearsals.
  2. Requirement to word it perfectly, you have had my car since the spring, and today you are evicted in the name of Jesus. The Holy Spirit is the one who steadies me, and it is written that a yes should be yes and a no should be no and nothing about it should be elaborate.
  3. Lord, You are the One who upholds with the right hand of Your own righteousness, as it is written, and I thank You that four of those five promises are about You and not one of them is a prediction about how this goes. There is one plain version to say out loud and write down today, and doing it is what I am doing.
