The form has been on the fridge for nine days, under the magnet shaped like a lemon, and every morning she reads the same line on it while the kettle boils. Please return by Friday. It is the September intake. Two pages, a box for the address, a box for a second contact, a signature at the bottom.
She is at the gate now with everyone else, coats and scooters and somebody's dog, and the form is folded in her coat pocket because she brought it to hand in and she is not going to hand it in. Not today. The landlord's letter came the same week as the form. Reviewing the arrangement. Four words, no date, and now she does not know which town her son will be waking up in when the leaves come down.
So the pen stays in her bag. Registering him here feels like a lie if they are gone by then. Not registering him feels like a lie in the other direction. And underneath both of those is the older thing, the thing that has followed her through six addresses: nothing is ever fixed enough to decide from. Every choice she has made in her adult life was made standing on something that turned out to be provisional.
The bell goes. The gate opens. He comes out with a painting that is still wet, and she takes it by the edge, and this is you, holding the wet thing and the folded thing at the same time, and the ground you were waiting for has not arrived, and you are starting to suspect it is not on its way.
The fixed point was never going to be the address
Say the true thing first, because it deserves saying. A decision needs somewhere to stand. Nobody signs a form from mid-air, and you have been asked to. Every time you reach for the pen you look for the thing that would make the choice safe, and the thing is not there: the tenancy, the letter, the answer, the plan. So the pen goes back in the bag, and somebody somewhere calls that indecision, and it is not. It is a person who has been asked to build on sand and has the sense to notice the sand.
Hesitation is not faithlessness. Scripture never calls it that, and the Holy Spirit does not accuse a person with it. Write that on the fridge next to the form if you need to.
Here is what David did with his sand. He wrote a psalm in a season when his own life had no fixed address, and one line in it is the whole of this message.
I have set the Lord always before me; because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken.Psalm 16:8
Read where he put the fixed point. Not out in the circumstances, waiting for them to settle. He put it in the room, at his right hand, the hand that holds the pen. He set Him there. It was a decision about where to look before it was ever a decision about anything else.
You have a fixed point in this room, and it is not the address. I am not handing you a technique. I am handing you what Scripture has already put in your hands, and His Spirit is the one who sets Him before you when you cannot see past the letter on the counter. He is at your right hand at the school gate. He is at your right hand at the fridge. That was true before Friday and it stays true after.
Rest is not the same as resolved
Two words that get confused, and the confusion is what has you stuck. Resolved is when the circumstances settle. Rest is when you do, and it is the Spirit who does it in you. You have been waiting for the first one so that you can have the second, and the order runs the other way.
The prophet put it in one line: in returning and rest you shall be saved, in quietness and trust shall be your strength (Isaiah 30:15). Look at what he did not say. He did not say in resolution. He did not say once the letter comes. Strength is placed in the quietness, and quietness is available in a house where nothing is decided.
Then Paul says something to a church that had plenty unsettled around it: let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts (Colossians 3:15). The word he uses for rule is the word for the umpire at the games, the one who makes the call. He is not saying the peace tells you which box to tick. He is saying the peace presides. It is the ground the deciding happens on. The tenancy does not get that seat, and neither does the letter, and neither does the fear that you have got every previous decision wrong.
You are in Christ, and Christ is the settled one, so you are standing on something that has never once been provisional. This is His written word and not my encouragement, and His Spirit is the one who makes it more than a sentence you read: He carries the settledness of Christ into the exact hour you are looking at the form. Nothing around you has to be resolved before you move, because the ground you move from is Him.
The mountain is small enough to speak to
Now the part that turns the page into a room.
Jesus said that faith no bigger than a seed, spoken to a mountain, moves it, and nothing is impossible (Matthew 17:20). Notice how little He asked for. Not a settled life. Not the whole decision. A seed's worth, and the seed is put to work by being said. You speak to the mountain. You do not wait until you feel like the mountain has already gone.
Name your mountain honestly. It is not the form. It is the sentence under the form: nothing is fixed enough for me to decide from. That is the thing that has run every address, and that is the thing you speak to.
You were given a voice with authority in it, and it works at a school gate as well as anywhere. Not because of how you sound. Scripture says the authority is Christ's and it is exercised in His name, and the Holy Spirit is the current in the words, not the volume of them. So the seed's worth today is not the whole choice. It is one part of it, said out loud, from the fixed point at your right hand.
You do not have to know where you are living in September to write your son's name on the first line. You do not have to know the ending to make the next honest mark. God holds your lot in His hand, David says a few lines earlier in the same psalm, and lot is the word for the outcome. He is holding it. He is not asking you to.
You have a fixed point that was never located in the paperwork, and it has been at your right hand through all six addresses. Psalm 16:8 says I have set the Lord always before me and because He is at my right hand I shall not be moved, and the Holy Spirit is the one who moves that off a page and into a kitchen.
If any of this ever turns dangerous, and staying safe genuinely comes into question, call or text a crisis line where you live, 988 in the United States, and tell a doctor or a counselor the plain truth about the weeks with that form on the fridge. Being established by God has never been a reason to face a hard stretch without a real person in the room.
Here is what is happening, in this room, now, and not later once things settle: the fixed point is being moved. Not the circumstances. The point you decide from. It is being taken off the letter, off the tenancy, off the version of the future you cannot see, and set where David set it, at your right hand.
You have somewhere to decide from, this minute, with the form still on the fridge. It is written that He is at your right hand and you shall not be shaken, and the Holy Spirit is the one making that a place you can stand and not a verse you admire. Nothing about the September question has moved. You have. And that is enough ground for one honest mark.
I do not know what you should decide, and I am not going to pretend to. That is between you and Him and it is not the point of this. The point is that you can decide at all, from rest, with the rest unresolved.
You are established this afternoon, in this kitchen, with September exactly as unanswered as it was this morning. It is written in Psalm 16:8 that He is at my right hand and I shall not be moved, and it is the Spirit of God who takes a written thing and makes it a standing thing in a person.
Declare this over yourself
Say it with the pen in your hand. Christ is in you, and the authority to speak to what has been running your decisions was given to you in Him, not earned by you at some future settled address. Scripture is the ground under each line and the Holy Spirit carries them, not the steadiness of your voice, so say them shaking if that is how they come. What He does with September is His to decide, and however He answers, He is at your right hand while He does it.
- Form on the fridge, you are one sheet of paper and you do not get to be the ground I stand on. The Lord is at my right hand and Scripture says that with Him there I am not shaken, so I decide from Him and I write your first line today.
- Fear that nothing is fixed enough, you have followed me through six addresses and you leave this one, in the name of Jesus. It is written that Christ in me has never been provisional, and His Spirit is the one who settles me, and rest comes before resolved, in that order, and it comes now.
- Lord, You are here at my right hand while the letter is still open on the counter, and I thank You that You hold my lot in Your hand and are not asking me to. You are the settled one, as it is written, and I am deciding from You, one true line at a time.
