Steadied Now1 Peter 5:10

Six Months in a Relative's Basement

This message is for to be steadied as a father of three living in a relative's basement between apartments, grateful and ashamed at the same time and unable to say either

The ceiling is seven feet and he has learned where the pipe is. Everybody has, by now. The children ducked for the first month and then stopped ducking, the way children absorb a place, and now the youngest walks under it without a thought and the oldest still ducks out of habit and gets teased for it.

It was going to be six weeks. That was the number said out loud in the kitchen upstairs in October, and it was said in good faith by everybody in the room. It has been six months. Nothing has gone wrong exactly. The first place fell through, and the second one wanted a deposit they did not have on the day, and the third one went to somebody faster, and none of that is a disaster and all of it adds up to a family of five sleeping under somebody else's floorboards through a whole winter.

The thing nobody talks about is that he feels two things at once and the two things do not mix. He is genuinely, deeply grateful. His sister took them in without one second of hesitation and has never once made a face about the noise. And he is ashamed, in a way he cannot justify and cannot argue himself out of, every single time he hears her walking around above him at six in the morning. Both are true. Neither cancels the other. He has stopped trying to say it out loud because it comes out wrong.

That combination is more common than anybody admits, and it does not require a basement. Anybody living inside somebody else's kindness for longer than the kindness was scheduled to last knows the taste of it. I am not going to promise anybody that the next place comes through. I have no word about the next place. What I have is a word about the man under the pipe.

Six Months in a Relative's Basement

The four verbs at the end of Peter's letter

I want to read one sentence with you, and I want to slow down on the last part of it, because the last part is a list and the list is the whole thing.

But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you.1 Peter 5:10

Four verbs. Perfect, establish, strengthen, settle. Now look at the subject of all four of them. It is not the reader. It is not the arrangement. It is God, called here the God of all grace, and every one of those four things is something He is described as doing to a person.

Peter is writing to people scattered across five provinces because they had to leave where they lived. They are the original readers of that sentence. Displaced people, in temporary arrangements, on somebody else's terms. And what Peter tells them is not that the housing gets sorted. He tells them who does the settling.

You are settled, and it is God who does the settling, not the lease that has not come through. That is not a kindness I am laying over a hard winter. It is the plain grammar of what is written in 1 Peter 5, and His Spirit is the one who takes a written line and makes it a standing fact in a man at the bottom of a stairwell. The basement is temporary. You are not.

And notice the word behind settle in that verse. It carries the sense of laying a foundation, of putting something on a base so it stops shifting. It is a builder's word. Peter uses a builder's word about people, and he is not describing where they live.

You have a foundation laid under you by the God of all grace, and no address has ever been asked to certify it. The written text puts all four verbs on Him, and it is the Spirit who makes an old letter land under a low ceiling.

About the two things that will not mix

Now the tender part, and I want to be very careful, because this is where a man in a basement usually gets told something that makes it worse.

The gratitude and the shame are both real, and I am not going to ask anybody to choose one and stop feeling the other. But I want to name what the shame is actually made of, because I think it has been misfiled.

It is not shame about being helped. Nobody in that house thinks less of him. It is grief about not being the one holding the floor up, and grief and shame feel almost identical from the inside. A man who has spent twenty years being the ground under his family hears somebody else's footsteps overhead and something in him reads it as failure, when what it actually is is loss, and loss deserves a completely different response than shame does.

Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.Psalm 55:22

That is a psalm written by a man who left his own city in a hurry. And the promise in it is not about the city. It is about a person being sustained and not moved, which is the same claim Peter makes with his four verbs, made a thousand years earlier by somebody walking out of town barefoot.

You were never the ground your family stood on, and finding that out has cost you something real. Psalm 55 puts the sustaining on the Lord, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a man grieve a thing without calling it a failure.

You are held right now, and the shame in the stairwell has been reading the situation wrong for six months. It is written that He sustains and does not let the righteous be moved, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes that land in a body at six in the morning.

If any of this ever turns dangerous, and staying safe genuinely comes into question for anyone in that house, call or text a crisis line where you live, 988 in the United States, and tell a doctor, a counselor or a social worker the truth about the months. Being settled by God has never been a reason to carry a real emergency alone.

The breakthrough

Here is where it turns, and it is not a plan. It is a shift of weight, and it happens in a second at the bottom of a staircase.

For six months the arrangement has been: settled arrives when the apartment comes through, and until then, be grateful and be small. Today the order reverses. God settles the person. He is doing it now, under a seven-foot ceiling, in a room with somebody else's boiler in the corner. Peter wrote those four verbs to people who had already lost their addresses and were not getting them back.

You are established today, in this basement, with three children on the rug and no lease in your name. I am not speaking my own comfort over anybody. 1 Peter 5:10 puts the establishing and the settling on the God of all grace, and it is His Spirit who takes a written thing and makes it a standing thing in a person.

And it turns practical immediately, which is the part that surprises men in particular. When the settling is God's work rather than the address's, the basement stops being a place to be endured and becomes a place a family lives for now. You can hang the calendar. You can put the good pan out. You can let the children have friends over under a low ceiling. You have a household right now, and it is not on hold until the paperwork. The written word puts all four verbs on God, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes that true in a man who has been apologizing with his shoulders since October.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, feet flat on the concrete. Not silently. The authority to speak to what stands in the way is not yours by nature and never was: it is written that you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the authority is His, delegated, carried in His name, and the Holy Spirit carries the word rather than the volume of your voice. What you speak to today is not your sister and not the landlord, because you have no authority over either and would not want it. What you speak to is the shame on the stairwell. Whatever He does with the housing is His to do, and you leave the outcome with Him. Who does the settling is not up for negotiation.

  1. Borrowed basement, you are four walls somebody else pays for, and you do not decide whether I am settled. First Peter 5:10 says the God of all grace establishes and settles a person, and He has been doing it down here all winter.
  2. Shame on that stairwell, you have been misreading footsteps for six months, and today you are evicted in the name of Jesus. The Holy Spirit is the one who steadies me, and it is written that He sustains and does not let the righteous be moved.
  3. Father, You are the God of all grace who establishes, strengthens and settles a person, as it is written, and I thank You that not one of those four verbs was ever assigned to a lease. There is a table to set down here today, and setting it is what I am doing.
