There are two sweaters in the suitcase, a photo album, and a set of good towels her aunt gave her when she turned twenty-one. Everything else lives in the room properly, in the drawers, on the hooks, on the shelf above the desk. But those four things stay in the suitcase, and the suitcase stays under the bed, and it has stayed there through this address and the two before it.
She is twenty-six. This is the fifth turnover of housemates in three years, and she found out about the newest one the way she found out about the last three, which is a message in a group chat on a Sunday night saying somebody is moving out at the end of the month and does anybody know anyone. She read it, said something friendly, and then lay on her back on the bed with the phone on her chest and did the arithmetic she has done so many times that it runs itself now. New person by June. New rhythm in the kitchen. Learn a new set of noises through the wall.
She is not unhappy. That is the strange part, and it is the part nobody would guess. She likes her work. She has friends. She laughs a lot and she means it. The only thing wrong is that she has been living for three years as though the real life starts later, and she cannot locate the day when that decision was made. Nobody sat her down. Nobody told her not to unpack. It just seemed sensible, at first, and then it seemed permanent, and now the sensible thing has quietly become the shape of her whole twenties.
Some readers know exactly which four objects those are. Different objects, same suitcase, same under-the-bed. And I am not going to sit here and tell anyone that the housing is about to settle down, because I have no word about the housing and I would not insult a person by inventing one. I want to talk instead about the woman on the floor beside the suitcase, and about what God has already done to her that has nothing whatever to do with the lease.

The verse that never mentions the address
I want to read one line with you slowly, because it is quoted often and almost always heard wrong.
The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way.Psalm 37:23
Look at what God is described as ordering. Not the house. Not the room. Not the arrangement with the housemates. The steps. And then look at the second half, which is the half that gets left off: He delights in the way. Not in the destination, not in the address at the end of the way, but in the walking of it, which means the part of your life you have filed under temporary is the exact part He is described as taking pleasure in.
You are ordered, and it is your steps He has ordered, not your postal address. That is not a nice thought I am adding on top of a hard week. It is what is written on the page, and it is the Spirit who takes a written line and makes it a standing fact in a person sitting on the floor of a rented room. The lease is provisional. The housemates are provisional. The steps are not.
There is a reason this matters more than a bit of comfort. If God orders the steps and delights in the way, then a life in motion is not a life on hold. It is the life. There is no waiting room version of you that He is going to start working with once the address stabilizes, because He has been working with the woman by the suitcase the whole time and did not consider the arrangement an obstacle.
You have His attention right now, in the room you did not choose, on the terms you did not set. Scripture says He orders the steps and delights in the way, and the Holy Spirit is the one who presses that into a chest rather than leaving it on a page. Nothing in that verse is waiting on a signature.
What the four things are actually for
Now let me say the tender part, and I want to say it carefully, because this is where a message like this usually turns into an accusation and I am not going to do that to anybody.
The four things in the suitcase are not a failure of faith. They are a reasonable response to a real history. A person who has moved five times learns to keep a small set of things ready, and that is not a spiritual problem, it is a body being sensible on behalf of a person who is tired. Nobody needs to be told off for the suitcase. What I want is for the suitcase to stop being the answer to a question it was never able to answer.
Because here is what the suitcase quietly promises, and it cannot deliver it: that if everything is ready to go, nothing can catch you off guard. That is what the packed bag is really for. Not the sweaters. The sweaters are not the point. The point is a small promise of readiness kept where a hand can reach it in the dark, and it has been standing in for something that only God has ever been able to give.
Trust in the LORD, and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed.Psalm 37:3
That sits nineteen verses above the one about the steps, in the same psalm, and notice that dwelling comes before the land is described. David does not write a property inventory. He writes about a person who is fed and who dwells, and the psalm keeps its attention on the person the whole way through.
You are dwelling already, and the psalm does not make that conditional on the length of your tenancy. I am standing on the written text of Psalm 37 for that, and on the Holy Spirit who is the one making a psalm land in a bedroom three thousand years later.
You were settled before this address and you will still be settled in the next one, because the settling was never done by the building. That is what it means for God to be the one who establishes a person: it is His work, described in His word, carried by His Spirit, and no landlord anywhere has been given a vote in it.
If any of this ever turns dangerous, and having somewhere safe to sleep genuinely comes into question, call or text a crisis line where you live, 988 in the United States, and tell a doctor, a counselor or a housing counselor the plain truth about your situation. Being steadied by God is not a reason to face a real emergency alone, and no article is a substitute for a person who can actually help.
Here is the turn, and it is not a technique or a plan. It is a transfer of weight, and it happens in a second.
For three years the arrangement has been this: settled arrives when the housing settles, and until then, live lightly. Tonight the order reverses. You stand first, on what God has actually made firm, and the housing goes on being exactly what it is. He ordered David's steps while David was hiding in caves. He delighted in the way while the way was still going through the wilderness. He did not wait for the address, and He is not waiting now.
You are established tonight, in this room, with the group chat still open on your phone. I am not speaking my own comfort over anyone. Psalm 37 says the steps are ordered and the way is delighted in, and it is the Spirit of God who takes a written thing and makes it a standing thing in a person.
And this is where it gets practical in a way that surprises people. When the settling is God's work rather than the building's, unpacking stops being a risk. It is not a bet on the lease. It is simply putting your sweaters in a drawer, because you live here, because you are somewhere God ordered your steps to, and because a person is allowed to live in the place where God has them. You have a life right now, not a life that starts when the housing does. Scripture puts the delight in the way itself, and it is His Spirit who makes that true in the body of somebody who has been holding her breath since she was twenty-three.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, feet still flat on the floor. Not silently. The authority to speak to what stands in your way is not yours by nature and never was: it is written that you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the authority is His, delegated, carried in His name, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries the word rather than the force of your voice. What you speak to tonight is not the housemate, not the landlord and not the lease, because you have no authority over any of those and I would never hand you any. What you speak to is the habit of living in a waiting room. Whatever He does with the arrangements is His to do, and you leave the outcome with Him. What you are standing on is not up for negotiation.
- Suitcase under the bed, you are luggage with a zipper, and you do not get to say whether I am settled. Scripture says the steps of a good person are ordered by the Lord, and He ordered mine into this room on purpose.
- Habit of living lightly, you have been the one steady thing in five addresses, and tonight you are evicted in the name of Jesus. The Holy Spirit is the one who settles me, and it is written that the Lord delights in the way and not only in the arrival.
- Lord, You are the One who orders steps, and it is written that You delight in the way, so I thank You that You never once asked me for a permanent address before You started. I have one thing to take out of that case today, and taking it out is what I am doing.
Psalm 37:23
