Steadied NowHebrews 13:8

She Stopped Saying Her Own Name

This message is for to be steadied as a woman who has left three towns and two congregations and has stopped introducing herself, because introductions assume you are staying

She has a coat that has been in three towns. It is a good coat and she has had it eleven years, and there is a mark on the left cuff from a paint job in the second town that never came out. She notices it sometimes and thinks about the room it happened in.

Two of the leavings were her decision and one was not. That distinction matters more to other people than it does to her, because the arithmetic on the inside comes out the same either way: she has arrived somewhere new three times, and been the new person three times, and gone through the whole exhausting business of being known three times, and twice she has watched all of it dissolve.

So she does not introduce herself any more. It is not dramatic and she would deny it if anybody put it that way. What actually happens is that she goes to a thing, and she is friendly, and she asks good questions, and she leaves without anybody having got her name, and she does that so smoothly now that she has stopped noticing she is doing it. If pressed, she would say she does not want to make it about her. That is not the reason. The reason is that an introduction is a small promise about staying, and she has had two of those broken and does not intend to make a third.

I want to sit here for a second before I say anything else, because this is a place people rush. If you are the person in the coat, you are not being difficult. You are being sensible, in the way a body is sensible after a burn. Nobody is going to be talked out of a burn by an argument, and I am not going to try. I have no word about whether this town holds. What I have is a word about the woman who is not saying her name.

She Stopped Saying Her Own Name

What the sentence in Hebrews is actually for

There is one line I want to put down here, and I want to put it down carefully, because it gets used as a slogan and it was written as a consolation.

Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.Hebrews 13:8

That sits in the middle of a passage about leaders who have died, about strange teachings that come and go, and about a people the writer describes as having no continuing city here. It is not written to people whose lives are stable. It is written to people watching things change and end, and it names the one thing in the frame that does neither.

Notice the structure of the sentence: yesterday, today, forever. It runs through time rather than standing outside it. Which means that the Person named there was the same in the first town as He is in this one, and was the same through the leaving that was her choice and the leaving that was not, and did not have to be reintroduced to her at any point on that road.

You are known already, and by Someone who did not need the introduction you have stopped making. That is not a nice thought laid over a hard eleven years. It is what is written in Hebrews 13, and His Spirit is the one who takes a written line and sets it down in a woman in a borrowed chair. The towns changed. He did not.

There is a second thing in that chapter, three verses earlier, and it is the one that tends to undo people who have been left.

I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.Hebrews 13:5

The Greek in that promise is stacked with negatives in a way English cannot really carry. It is not a polite assurance. It is closer to: I will not, not, not leave you. And it is spoken to a people in exactly the situation of the woman with the coat.

You were never left, not once, in any of those three towns. Hebrews 13:5 is where that stands, and it is the Spirit who makes an emphatic old promise land in a body that has learned not to expect one.

Why the introduction feels like a promise

Now let me name the mechanism, because I think naming it does more good than arguing with it.

An introduction is not information. If it were information it would cost nothing. What an introduction actually does is open an account: here is my name, here is a small piece of me, and the assumption underneath it is that there is a future in which that account gets added to. That is why saying your name in a new room after two endings feels physically expensive. The body is not confused. It knows what it is being asked to spend.

So the withholding is not pride and it is not coldness. It is a person declining to open an account she expects to have to close.

And here is what I want to put underneath it, and it is not an argument that this town will hold, because I cannot make that argument.

For here have we no continuing city, but we seek one to come.Hebrews 13:14

The writer says that to people who have already lost the city they had. And he does not say it as a lament. He says it as the reason they can be generous, hospitable, unafraid, and free with what they have, which is what the whole surrounding passage is about. People with no continuing city are described in that chapter as the ones who can afford to open their hands.

You have a city that is not any of the three you have lived in, and it is the one that makes an introduction affordable again. It is written that we seek a city to come, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a future city change what a woman can risk in a present room.

You are held by One who is the same yesterday and today and forever, and no leaving has ever interrupted that sentence. Hebrews 13:8 is where that is written, and the Spirit of God is the one who presses it into a person in a coat with a mark on the cuff.

If the leaving ever turns dangerous, and staying safe genuinely comes into question, call or text a crisis line where you live, 988 in the United States, and tell a doctor or a counselor the truth about the towns. Being held by an unchanging God has never been a reason to sit alone with something that needs a real person in the room.

The breakthrough

Here is the turn, and it is not a social technique. It is the weight moving, and it happens in a chair.

For eleven years the arrangement has been: introduce yourself when you know you are staying, and until then, be friendly and be invisible. Today the order reverses. You are known first, by the One who has been the same through every town, and the staying goes on being exactly as unknown as it is. Hebrews was written to people who had lost their city and were not getting it back, and the writer told them to keep showing hospitality to strangers anyway.

You are established today, in this room, with the coat still on the back of the chair. I am not laying my own encouragement over anybody. Hebrews 13 says He is the same yesterday and today and forever, and it is His Spirit who takes a written thing and makes it a standing thing in a person.

And the practical turn is small and it is enormous. When the knowing is God's and not the town's, saying your name stops being a promise about staying. It is not a bet on this place. It is a fact about you, said out loud, in a room you are in today. You have a name to say, and saying it commits you to nothing about next year. The written word puts the sameness in Christ across every yesterday and every today, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes that true in a body that has learned to leave a room unnamed.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, feet flat on the floor. Not silently. The authority to speak to what stands in the way is not yours by nature and never was: it is written that you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the authority is His, delegated, carried in His name, and the Holy Spirit carries the word rather than the volume of your voice. What you speak to today is not the people who left and not the ones who stayed, because you have no authority over any of them and would not want it. What you speak to is the rule that says an introduction is a promise. Whatever He does with this town is His to do, and you leave the outcome with Him. Who knows your name is not up for negotiation.

  1. Habit of not introducing myself, you are a door I keep closed, and you do not decide whether I belong. Hebrews 13:8 says Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever, and He knew my name in all three towns.
  2. Rule that an introduction is a promise, you have run eleven years of rooms, and today you are evicted in the name of Jesus. The Holy Spirit is the one who steadies me, and it is written, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.
  3. Lord, You are the same yesterday and today and forever, as it is written, and I thank You that You never once had to be reintroduced to me between one town and the next. There is a name to say out loud in this room, and saying it is what I am doing.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
