The onions go in first, and they take longer than anybody thinks. That is the thing he tells people who ask him for the recipe, and almost nobody believes him until they have made it themselves and served something thin and pale and wondered where the depth went. Twenty-five minutes, low, stirred often. There is no shortcut, and he has never found one, and he is not looking.
The application has been with them for eleven months. The website says the processing time is between six and eighteen months, which is a sentence that means nothing at all and is also the only sentence anybody has given him. He checks it on Tuesdays. He used to check it daily, and stopped, not because he made peace with it but because the checking was eating the day and giving nothing back. His lease runs to the end of April. His work depends on the renewal. His whole spring depends on a stranger's decision about a file he cannot see.
And yet the pot is on. That is what he keeps noticing about himself, and he cannot decide whether it is faith or stubbornness. He bought a good pot in a year when he might have had to leave. He bought spices in quantities that assume months. He put a nail in the wall, which the agreement probably does not allow, and hung a photograph of his grandmother on it. Tonight there are four people coming, and the bread is under a cloth on the counter, and he has no idea whether he will be in this kitchen in June.
That will be familiar to a lot of people, and not only to people with paperwork. Anyone waiting on a decision made somewhere else, by somebody who does not know their name, on a timeline nobody will confirm, knows the exact feeling of cooking a meal in a kitchen they cannot promise. I have no word about the file. I would not pretend to. What I have is a word about the man stirring the onions.

The verse everybody quotes and almost nobody finishes
Let me put the line in front of us properly, because it is on a great many walls and the important half is usually the half left off the wall.
Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.Isaiah 26:3
Notice what the mind is stayed on. Not the outcome. Not the decision. Not the letter that has not come. Thee. A person. The Hebrew behind stayed carries the sense of something propped, leaned, supported against a thing that holds, which is what you do with a door that will not stay shut: you lean it on something solid. Isaiah does not say the peace comes when the situation resolves. He says the peace is kept, and the keeping runs while the situation stays exactly as unresolved as it is.
You are kept, and it is God who does the keeping, not the answer that has not arrived. I am not making that up as an encouragement over a hard year. It is what is written in Isaiah 26, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes a written line and props a mind against it at eleven o'clock at night. The file is undecided. You are not.
There is a second thing in that verse, and it is easy to walk past. The word for peace is doubled in the Hebrew, shalom shalom, which is how that language says completely, thoroughly, all the way down. Not a thin coating of calm over an anxious man. Something that goes to the bottom. Isaiah is not describing a person who has stopped caring about the outcome. He is describing a person whose weight has been shifted off it.
You have a peace that was never contingent on the timeline, and it is kept for you rather than generated by you. That is Isaiah's word and not my opinion, and it is the Spirit of God who makes an ancient sentence hold a person up in a rented kitchen.
What the pot on the stove already knows
Now I want to say something about the cooking, because I think the man at the stove is wiser than he knows and has not been told so.
There is a way of waiting that stops living, and everybody who has waited a long time has met it. It says: do not start the long recipe, do not buy the good pot, do not invite anybody, do not put a nail in a wall, because it may all be for nothing. It sounds like prudence. It is actually a small daily agreement that the decision on the desk gets to say whether this is a real life yet.
He did not make that agreement. He put the pot on. And whether he could have explained it or not, what he did was live as an established person in an unestablished arrangement, which is precisely the thing Scripture describes God doing to people.
The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust.Psalm 18:2
Look at how many of those are structures and how not one of them is his structure. A rock he did not lay. A fortress he did not build. The psalmist is a man in motion writing about immovable things that belong to somebody else and hold him anyway.
You were made steady by a God who is Himself the fortress, and the arrangement you live inside was never load bearing. The written word puts the strength in Him and not in the address, and it is His Spirit who moves that from a page into a chest.
I want to be careful here, because I know exactly the move a tired mind makes. It hears kept in perfect peace and quietly translates it into so the renewal is coming through. I am not saying that, and I will not say it, because I have no word about the file and inventing one would be a cruelty dressed as encouragement. What I am saying is that whether the letter comes in June or in the following spring, it does not decide whether you are kept, because that was decided by Someone who does not need the paperwork.
You are established in the middle of an undecided year, and the establishing does not pause while a file sits on a desk. Isaiah 26:3 puts the keeping on God and the staying on the mind, and it is the Holy Spirit who holds a person there when the checking starts again on Tuesday.
If the waiting ever turns dangerous, and staying safe genuinely comes into question, call or text a crisis line where you live, 988 in the United States, and tell a doctor or a counselor the plain truth about the nights. Being kept by God has never been a reason to sit alone with something that needs a person in the room.
Here is the turn, and it is not a method. It is a shift of weight, and it can happen while the onions are still going.
For eleven months the arrangement has been: peace arrives when the decision arrives, and until then, hold on. Tonight the order reverses. The peace is kept now, by God, in the unresolved middle, and the decision goes on being exactly as undecided as it is. Isaiah wrote that verse to a people whose city walls were a live question. He did not tell them the walls would hold. He told them who keeps a mind that leans.
You are kept tonight, in this kitchen, with the file still open on somebody's desk. I am not speaking my own comfort over anybody. Isaiah 26:3 says the keeping belongs to God and the staying belongs to the mind, and it is the Spirit who takes a written thing and makes it a standing thing in a person.
And this is where it gets practical in a way that surprises people. When the peace is kept rather than manufactured, hospitality stops being a risk. Setting the table is not a bet on the renewal. It is what a person does who lives somewhere, and you live here, tonight, on ground God laid. You have a table to set right now, and it is not a wager on the outcome. The written word puts the perfect peace on the one whose mind stays on Him, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that true in the body of a man who has been checking a website every Tuesday since last summer.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, feet still flat on that floor. Not silently. The authority to speak to what stands in the way is not yours by nature and never was: it is written that you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the authority is His, delegated, carried in His name, and the Holy Spirit carries the word rather than the volume of your voice. What you speak to tonight is not the office and not the officer, because you have no authority over either and I would never hand you any. What you speak to is the habit of living provisionally. Whatever He does with the file is His to do, and you leave the outcome with Him. What is holding you is not up for negotiation.
- Undecided paperwork, you are a file on a desk, and you do not get to decide whether I am kept. Isaiah 26:3 says He keeps in perfect peace the one whose mind stays on Him, and my mind is leaning there tonight.
- Habit of living provisionally, you have run my kitchen for eleven months, and tonight you are evicted in the name of Jesus. The Holy Spirit is the one who steadies me, and it is written that my God is a rock and a fortress that I did not build.
- Lord, You are the keeper of a mind that stays, as it is written, and I thank You that the perfect peace in that verse never once waited on an answer from an office. There is bread under a cloth and a table to set, and setting it is what I am doing.
