Where I am staying. That is the phrase, and she has used it for eleven years, and she used it twice this morning without noticing.
She has an apartment. It is hers, on a lease she signed, with her own furniture in it and her own name on the mail. When she talks about it she says the place I am in at the moment, or where I am staying, or my current situation, and she has said all three of those this week.
A friend caught it in the summer. Not unkindly. She said: you know you have lived there four years. And she laughed and said something about being nomadic, and the friend let it go, and she has been listening to herself ever since and it is worse than she thought.
It goes further than the apartment. She does it about her work. She does it about the group she has been part of for three years and describes as a thing I have been going along to. She does it about a friendship of six years that she introduced last month as somebody I know a bit.
And here is the thing that frightened her when she finally saw it. She is not being modest. She is holding a door open. Every one of those qualifiers is an exit written into the sentence in advance, so that when it goes, and she assumes it will go, she will have already told everybody she was never really claiming it.
Some people learned early not to claim things. I am going to leave that as a description and not build it into an explanation, because I do not know her history and I am not going to narrate it back to her, and I am certainly not going to put a name to the people in it. That is not what this is for and it is not mine to do.
An anchor that is already inside
Let me put down a line and notice where the anchor in it is.
Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil.Hebrews 6:19
An anchor is not thrown down to hold something that is already still. An anchor is for a thing in motion, in water, in weather. The image assumes the ship is being moved on and says that the holding is happening anyway, somewhere the ship cannot see.
And then the writer says where it is. Within the veil, which is the innermost place, which is the one part of the whole picture that is not subject to weather at all.
You are anchored, and the anchor is already set in a place your circumstances cannot reach. That is not a comfort I am handing to a woman who cannot say a word plainly. It is what is written in Hebrews 6, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes a written line and puts it under somebody at a kitchen table. The apartment is a lease. The anchor is inside the veil.
Look at the two adjectives, because they were chosen. Sure and steadfast. One is about reliability and one is about not moving, and they are both about the anchor rather than about the person holding the rope.
You have a hope that is doing the holding rather than something you are required to hold on to. Hebrews 6:19 is the written word for it, and it is the Spirit of God who makes an old letter land in a woman who says where I am staying about her own address.
What the qualifier is for
Now the tender part, and it goes first.
The qualifier is not dishonesty and it is not false modesty. It is insurance, and it is the cheapest insurance available, and she has been paying that price for eleven years without ever seeing a bill.
Here is what it costs, said plainly and without accusation. A sentence with an exit in it cannot be a claim. So a woman who qualifies everything is never actually in possession of anything, and the safety she buys is real and the price is her whole life at one remove.
And I want to be careful about the fix, because the obvious one is wrong. The fix is not to catch herself and correct her vocabulary. That is a person policing her own speech, and it lasts about four days and then produces shame.
Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands; thy walls are continually before me.Isaiah 49:16
Look at the direction of that. It is not a person claiming God. It is God claiming a person, in permanent ink, on Himself.
You were claimed first, in writing, on a hand, and no qualifier you have ever used altered that sentence. Isaiah 49:16 is the line it rests on, and it is His Spirit who lets a woman who cannot claim anything discover that she has already been claimed.
You are held right now, in an apartment that is yours, whatever you called it this morning. It is written that the anchor of the soul is sure and steadfast and enters within the veil, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes that true in a body that has been writing exits into its own sentences for eleven years.
If any of this ever turns dangerous, and staying safe genuinely comes into question, call or text a crisis line where you live, 988 in the United States, and tell a doctor or a counselor plainly about the years of not being able to say the word. Habits like this respond to real help from real people, and being anchored inside the veil has never been a reason to work through it alone.
This is the turn, and it is not a speech-correction exercise. It is the weight moving, and it happens at a table with people talking over each other.
For eleven years the arrangement has been: do not claim it and it cannot be taken. Today the order reverses. The anchor is already inside the veil, set there by Somebody else, and the claiming goes back to being what it always was: a description of what is true rather than a bet that could lose.
You are established today, at this table, with a sentence you qualified twice before breakfast. This is not me putting a kind opinion over anybody. Hebrews 6:19 puts the anchor within the veil and calls it sure and steadfast, and it is the Spirit who takes a written thing and makes it a standing thing in a person.
And here is the practical part, and it is one item wide. Not the vocabulary. One small thing, kept the same at the same hour, treated as yours, in private, with nothing announced to anybody. A body that has never claimed anything learns by having one thing that comes back the same. You have one small ordinary thing available to claim today, and claiming it commits you to nothing you have to defend. The written word says the anchor is sure and steadfast, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that true in a woman who introduced a six year friendship as somebody she knows a bit.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, feet flat on the floor. Not silently. The authority to speak to what stands in the way is not yours by nature and never was: it is written that you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the authority is His, delegated, carried in His name, and the Holy Spirit carries the word rather than the volume of your voice. What you speak to today is nobody from your past, because they are not the subject of this and you have no authority over any of them. What you speak to is the exit written into every sentence. Whatever He does with the lease and the friendships is His to do, and you leave the outcome with Him. Where the anchor is set is not up for negotiation.
- Word I keep qualifying, you are one syllable, and you do not decide whether I am anchored. Hebrews 6:19 says the anchor of the soul is sure and steadfast and reaches inside the veil, and it was set there before I ever qualified anything.
- Exit written into my sentences, you have had eleven years of my speech, and today you are evicted in the name of Jesus. The Holy Spirit is the one who steadies me, and it is written that He has graven me on the palms of His hands.
- Lord, You are the One who set the anchor inside the veil, as it is written, and I thank You that You claimed me in permanent ink before I was able to claim anything at all. There is one small ordinary thing to keep at the same hour today, and keeping it is what I am doing.
