Solid GroundIsaiah 54:10

The Sound of a Car in the Drive

This message is for steadiness for a woman whose whole body still reacts to tires on gravel, forty years after the last time that sound meant anything at all

It is not a thought. That is the thing she has never been able to explain properly to anybody who has not had it.

There is no sequence where she hears the tires and then thinks about what it might mean and then feels something. The feeling is first. The feeling is already all the way finished before any part of her that does thinking has been informed. By the time she can tell herself it is a delivery driver, her heart rate has been up for four seconds and her shoulders are somewhere near her ears.

She is sixty-two. It has been forty years since that sound meant anything at all. She lives alone in a house she likes, and she loves her family, and there is not one person alive who would arrive in that yard and be a problem.

Her granddaughter noticed last summer. Said, quite casually: you jumped. And she said something light and changed the subject, and thought about it for the rest of the afternoon.

I am going to be careful here, and I want to be explicit about why. There is an obvious article available at this point, and it explains a woman by narrating her past to her and putting a name on the people in it. I am not going to write it. I do not know her family, and neither does anybody reading this, and handing a stranger a verdict on people she loves and has forgiven, or has not, is not help. It is a shortcut, and she deserves better.

Here is the description, which is all I will offer: some bodies learned early to react to a specific sound faster than thought, and those bodies kept the skill. It is not a flaw and it is not a wound to be dug at in an article. It is a system doing exactly what it was built to do, forty years after the last time it needed to.

What is allowed to move in that verse

Let me put a line down and notice what God permits in it.

For the mountains shall depart, and the hills be removed; but my kindness shall not depart from thee, neither shall the covenant of my peace be removed, saith the LORD that hath mercy on thee.Isaiah 54:10

Read what is allowed to go. Mountains. Hills. The things human beings use as their standard example of permanence, and God concedes them without argument. He does not say they will not move. He says they can, and that His kindness will not.

That is a specific and remarkable structure. He is not offering a world in which nothing shifts. He is naming one thing inside a shifting world that is fixed, and He puts it in the category of covenant, which is a legal word, which means it does not depend on anybody's feelings including His.

You are inside a covenant of peace that is not permitted to be removed, and the ground under your yard is less fixed than that is. That is not a soothing line handed to a startled woman. It is what is written in Isaiah 54, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes a written line and sets it into a body that is already four seconds into a reaction. The gravel is a sound. The covenant is a legal instrument.

And notice who is speaking at the end of the verse: the Lord that hath mercy on thee. Not the Lord who is disappointed that you jumped. The whole sentence is signed by mercy.

You have a kindness that is contractually not going anywhere, and it was never conditional on your nervous system's opinion. Isaiah 54:10 is where the word puts it, and it is the Spirit of God who makes an old covenant land in a gravel yard on an ordinary afternoon.

The jump is not a failure of faith

Now the part this category exists for, and it needs to go first.

She did not fail at anything when she jumped. Forty years of faith did not fail. The reaction happens below the level where faith operates, in the same place that pulls a hand off a hot pan before a person has decided anything, and telling somebody to have more faith about it is like telling them to have more faith about a reflex hammer.

I want to say that plainly because a lot of sincere people have been made to feel that a startle response is evidence of unbelief, and it is not, and the confusion has kept people from getting help that would have worked.

And there is nobody to put on trial. Whatever happened long ago, this article is not the place where a family gets sentenced, and a woman does not need a villain in order to be steadied this afternoon.

Thou art my hiding place; thou shalt preserve me from trouble; thou shalt compass me about with songs of deliverance.Psalm 32:7

Compass me about is a surrounding word. The image is not of a person who has stopped reacting. It is of a person with something all the way around them while things are happening.

You were surrounded rather than made unreactive, and those have never been the same promise. Psalm 32:7 is where that stands, and it is His Spirit who lets a person stop measuring their faith by their heart rate.

You are at peace right now, in the four seconds after the tires, and the covenant did not pause while your shoulders came up. It is written that the covenant of peace is not removed, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes that true in a body that has been reacting faster than thought since it was a girl.

If any of this ever turns dangerous, and staying safe genuinely comes into question, call or text a crisis line where you live, 988 in the United States, and tell a doctor or a counselor plainly about the jumping and how long it has gone on. Bodies that react like this respond well to real help from real people, and being inside God's covenant of peace has never been a reason to go without it.

The breakthrough

Here is where it turns, and it is not a cure for the startle. It is a transfer of weight, and it happens in a gravel yard.

For forty years the arrangement has been: I will be at peace when my body stops doing this. This afternoon the order reverses. The covenant of peace is not removed, it never was, and the jumping goes back to being what it always was: a fast old reflex in a body that learned young, which was never the measure of anything.

You are established this afternoon, in this yard, four seconds after a car you did not expect. None of this is my own comfort spoken over anybody. Isaiah 54:10 lets the mountains go and holds the covenant fixed, and it is the Spirit who takes a written thing and makes it a standing thing in a person.

And here is the practical part, and it has two halves. The first is that the four seconds afterward can belong to something you choose rather than to the sound. The second is smaller and slower: give the body one repeated ordinary thing at the same hour, so that it collects evidence that some things happen the same way again. You have permission to keep reacting while both of those go on, because the peace was never contingent on the reaction stopping. The written word says the covenant of peace shall not be removed, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that true in a body at the speed a body moves.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, feet flat on the ground. Not silently. The authority to speak to what stands in the way is not yours by nature and never was: it is written that you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the authority is His, delegated, carried in His name, and the Holy Spirit carries the word rather than the volume of your voice. What you speak to today is nobody from forty years ago, because they are not the subject of this and you have no authority over any of them. What you speak to is the claim that peace has to wait for a reflex. Whatever He does with the jumping is His to do, and you leave the outcome with Him. What the covenant says is not up for negotiation.

  1. Sound of tires on gravel, you are a noise, and you do not decide whether I am at peace. Isaiah 54:10 says the covenant of my peace shall not be removed, and it was not removed in the four seconds after you.
  2. Claim that peace has to wait, you have had my afternoons for forty years, and today you are evicted in the name of Jesus. The Holy Spirit is the one who steadies me, and it is written that He compasses me about with songs of deliverance.
  3. Lord, You are the One whose kindness does not depart and whose covenant of peace is not removed, as it is written, and I thank You that the mountains were allowed to go and this was not. There is one ordinary thing to keep at the same hour today, and keeping it is what I am doing.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
