The Woman Everyone Calls Together

Together. That is the word, and she has heard it about herself for perhaps fifteen years, and she has never once known what to do with her face when somebody says it.

You are so together. How do you do it. I wish I was as together as you.

What is true is that she is organized, and she is reliable, and her house is in reasonable order, and she can hold four things at once and does. All of that is real and she is not pretending any of it.

What is also true is that she has not felt steady on the inside for one single day that she can remember. Not once. Not a day. Not since well before any of the things people would point to if they were looking for a reason.

She is forty-five, and the two facts sit next to each other and do not touch. It is not that the outside is a lie. It is that the outside is accurate about one thing and mute about another, and everybody keeps reading the accurate part and telling her about it.

Anybody who has been complimented for something that does not match their insides knows this. And I want to say at the very start, because a lot of writing on this subject goes wrong here: she is not pretending. Nobody in this article is going to be told to drop a mask, because there is no mask. There is a genuinely capable woman with an unsteady interior, and those two things are both true at the same time and neither one is a performance.

Truth in the inward parts

Let me put down a line and notice where God is described as wanting the truth to be.

Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom.Psalm 51:6

Inward parts. Hidden part. David uses two different phrases for the same region in one verse, and both of them name the place nobody else can see.

That is a remarkable thing to find in Scripture if a person has spent fifteen years being complimented on an exterior. God's stated interest is in the part of her nobody has ever mentioned, and He is not described as being deceived by the outside or as disapproving of it. He is simply described as being interested in the other place.

You are known in the hidden part, and that is the region God says He desires truth in. That is not a soft word for a woman at a kitchen table. It is what is written in Psalm 51, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a written line and puts it into somebody at nine in the evening. The word together is accurate about the outside. The inside has its own witness.

And look at the second half of the verse, because it is the half that gets skipped. In the hidden part He makes a person know wisdom. Make me. It is something done to a person in the interior, by God, rather than something a person achieves there by effort.

You have wisdom being worked into the hidden part by Someone else, and it was never a thing you had to generate in there alone. Psalm 51:6 is where the word puts it, and His Spirit is the one who makes an old psalm land in a woman everybody calls together.

Nobody here is calling it a mask

Now the part this category exists for, and it needs to go first, because a great deal of well-meant writing has done real damage on exactly this point.

She is not a hypocrite. She is not performing. The competence is not a costume, and telling a genuinely capable person that their capability is a defense mechanism is both insulting and usually wrong.

Here is what is actually going on, said accurately: the outside is true and it is not the whole truth, and there has never been an occasion on which the other half could be said out loud without it sounding like a complaint from somebody with nothing to complain about.

And that is the second thing this article will not do. It will not suggest that a stable-looking life makes an ache smaller. It does not. An unsteady interior is exactly as heavy in a tidy house as in a chaotic one, and possibly heavier, because in a tidy house nobody comes looking.

Man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.1 Samuel 16:7

That verse is usually preached as a warning against judging by appearances. Read it the other way for a moment. It is also a description of somebody who has been looking at the right place the entire time.

You were being looked at in the right place while everybody else was reading the outside. 1 Samuel 16:7 is where that stands, and it is the Spirit who lets a person be seen where the compliments never reached.

You are held right now, at this table, with fifteen years of the same word said about you. It is written that God desires truth in the inward parts and makes wisdom known in the hidden part, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that true in a woman who has not felt steady for a single day.
