Five men and an upright piano on a stairwell that was never drawn with a piano in mind, and the one calling the count is the one they always ask.
He is the steady one. Everybody on the street knows it. He has the straps and he knows which way the weight wants to go on the half landing, and when the youngest man on the bottom end starts to panic he says his name once, low, and the young man settles. They take it up in three lifts. Nobody gets hurt. On the landing they stand around it laughing the way men laugh when a thing that could have gone wrong did not, and the woman whose piano it is comes up the stairs with a tray of mugs and says what people have said to him his whole life, that she does not know what any of them would do without him.
And his hand is on the banister.
It has been on the banister since they set the piano down. Not for the piano. He has held on to rails and door frames and the backs of chairs since he was a boy, because the floor has never once felt level inside him, and it does not feel level now, in a house full of people who think he is the most solid thing in it. Good work, twenty six years in the same trade, a marriage that has held, children who ring him. From the street it is a finished build. Inside there is a floor that has never stopped moving and a man who has never told anyone, because who would believe the steady one, and what would it do to the people leaning on him.
You know that landing. You know the exact weight of the mug in your hand while somebody thanks you for being the rock. And you know the banister, or whatever your banister is: the thing your hand goes to when the room believes in you and the floor inside you does not.
Every load in the house was rated except this one
Let me tell you how a builder thinks, because it is the only way I know how to think, and it is where this article is going.
Nothing bears weight in a house by accident. Every joist, every lintel, every beam over a stairwell has a number on it somewhere, a load it was rated to carry, and a man signed for it. The piano went up that stairwell safely because somebody, years ago, worked out what those stairs could hold. That is what established means in a building. It is not that the walls look good. It is that the load was reckoned and the ground was proven and something underneath was made to hold.
Now here is the ache, and I am going to say it plainly because you have not been able to. Every visible load in your life has been rated. The work, the years, the household, the people who lean. Somebody looked at all of that and signed it off, and by every measure they had, they were right. What was never rated is the load inside you. The floor that moves. The hand that finds the rail. Nobody surveyed that, because nobody knew it was there, and you have carried it as if it were a defect in the build rather than a load somebody was meant to hold.
You are not a defect. You are a person God is establishing, and He started on the inside, where the survey never reached. Paul writes to a church that had watched him wobble, that had wondered whether he was as steady as he claimed, and he tells them where his steadiness actually sits: it is God who establishes us in Christ, God who anointed us, God who sealed us and gave us His Spirit in our hearts as an earnest (2 Corinthians 1:21). Read where the seal is set. Not on the front of the house. In the heart. God did not establish your outside and leave the inside to you.
Now he who establishes us with you in Christ, and has anointed us, is God, who has also sealed us and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.2 Corinthians 1:21-22
That is not a description of steady people. It is a description of what God did to unsteady ones. Paul chose those words in a letter where he admits to being pressed beyond his strength and despairing of life itself, and in the same breath says God is the one doing the establishing. The two sit on one page without contradiction. The floor can move and the footing can hold, because the footing was never the floor.
The gap is not a lie
I need to take one thing off you before we go further, because it is the thing carried up every staircase, and it is heavier than the piano.
You have thought that the gap between how your life looks and how it feels makes you a fraud. That the steadiness people see is a performance and one day the plaster comes off. Hear me carefully: a man who has held a family together and never once let the youngest man on the bottom end fall is not pretending to be steady. He is steady, in every place that can be seen, and he is unsteady in the one place that cannot, and both of those are true and neither cancels the other. Your outside is not a lie. Your inside is not the truth about you either. Both of them are rooms in a house God is building, and He is not confused about which is which.
You have His Spirit in your heart as an earnest, and an earnest is set on the inside of a thing, not on its face. That is what the written word says, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes it more than ink: He is the seal, and He is the one carrying this sentence into the room inside you where the floor moves. It is not the words doing it. It is Him.
And an outwardly settled life does not make your ache smaller. I have watched people apologize for their pain because it did not look like enough from the outside to be allowed. God does not measure it from the street. He measures it from where He sits, which is inside you.
What He is holding, and what has been resting on you
Here is the mechanics of it. Everything provisional in a life gets its steadiness from what it stands on. That is why acquiring more of the visible things never touched the floor inside you: another year in the trade, another thing that held, and the hand still went to the rail. The visible was resting on the invisible the whole time, and the invisible was resting on you. No wonder it moved.
Established, in Scripture, is not a thing a person achieves. It is a thing done to a person by God. He establishes the heart. He fixes what is unfixed. And the part of you nobody can see from outside is exactly the part He said He would hold, because it is exactly the part you cannot.
You are held from underneath, right now, in the place you have never let anyone see, and it is His Spirit doing the holding and not your grip on the rail. He promised to establish; the sealing is His and the earnest is His. Nothing about that waits on you feeling steady first. Establishing is what He does; feeling it is what follows, in His own time, and He does not send the invoice for the gap.
So the unsteadiness in you is not a secret you have to keep from God. He is already in that room. He is not shocked by the floor. He rated that load before you were born, and He is standing under it.
You have been established from the inside by God rather than assessed from the street by anybody. Second Corinthians 1:21 says it is God who establishes us in Christ and has anointed us, and the Spirit of God is the one who does the work in the room the survey never reached.
If any of this ever turns dangerous, and staying safe genuinely comes into question, call or text a crisis line where you live, 988 in the United States, and tell a doctor or a counselor the plain truth about the landing and the rail. Being established by God has never been a reason to face a hard stretch without a real person in the room.
Here is what happens now, on the landing, with your hand still on the rail.
You do not let go of it. Nobody is asking you to prove anything. What you do is name, out loud, the gap. The way your life looks and the way it feels, said once in the same sentence, in your own words, without correcting either half. That is not confession of a fault. It is a survey, finally, of the one load nobody surveyed, and it is spoken to the God who has been under it the whole time.
You are in Christ, and Christ is in you, and that is the footing this whole thing rests on: not your steadiness, His. God said it in His word and He sealed it with His Spirit, and He did the sealing on the inside because the inside was where He always intended to be. When you say the gap out loud you are not exposing a flaw in the build. You are reading the number off the beam. It was rated. It was always rated. You just never saw who signed for it.
You are established tonight, on this landing, with the same gap you had this morning between the outside and the inside. It is written in 2 Corinthians 1:21 that God establishes us in Christ and anoints us and seals us, and it is His Spirit who takes a written thing and makes it a standing thing in a person.
Declare this over yourself
Now say these three out loud, and say them from where you actually stand, which is in Christ, with the authority of a person He established and did not ask to establish themselves. Scripture supplies the ground and the Holy Spirit supplies the current; your voice supplies neither and does not have to. Jesus said whoever speaks to the mountain, and does not doubt in his heart, will have what he says. Speaks. So speak to it, and hand Him what happens next, because He does the establishing in His own way and the feeling of it is His to give.
- Gap between how it looks and how it feels, you are not a secret any more and you are not a verdict. Second Corinthians 1:21 says it is God who establishes me in Christ, and He has a hand on both sides of you and has never once mistaken my outside for my inside.
- Fear of being found hollow, get out, in the name of Jesus. Scripture says God sealed me and set His Spirit in my heart as an earnest, and a seal is set on the inside of a thing, not on its face.
- Lord, You are the One who establishes me, as it is written, and You are doing it in the room nobody sees. I am standing on the earnest You put in my heart and not on how I look from the street, and I thank You that You rated this load before I was born and You are under it now.
