He could always do it. That is the whole story in five words and everybody who has known him for twenty years would say the same thing.
Whatever needed lifting, he lifted. Doubles, when the money was short. His mother's whole apartment down two flights of stairs in one Saturday with two of his cousins, and he did most of it, and there is a photograph of the three of them at the bottom of the stairs looking wrecked and delighted. He is the man in a family who gets rung when something is heavy.
It went on a Tuesday and it did not go dramatically. He bent to pick up a box that was not heavy, and something in the low part of his back said no in a way that was not a warning. And it has been eleven weeks and there has been an appointment and a scan and a physical therapist who is kind and precise, and the words that came back are not catastrophic and not good.
The pain is not the thing. He wants that understood. He has had pain. What has actually happened is that a man who has been the one who lifts is now a man who watches other people lift, and something under his whole life has come loose, and he cannot find a word for it and has not tried out loud.
Anybody whose body was the plan knows this without a diagram. It does not require a back. A voice, a pair of hands, a memory, a face: plenty of people have been standing on a part of themselves. I am not going to promise anybody a recovery. I do not know and nobody honest does. What I want to talk about is the ground.

The foundation that stands whether or not you can
Let me put a line down, and I want to be careful with it, because it is a verse with a warning attached and I am going after the first half.
Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his.2 Timothy 2:19
Paul writes that in the middle of a passage about things going wrong in a church, people falling away, a mess he cannot fix from a prison cell. Nevertheless. That word is doing a lot of work. It means: with all of that being true, this other thing is also true and it did not move.
The foundation of God stands sure. Not the foundation you laid. Not the foundation your body was. His, standing, in the present tense, and the seal on it is not a statement about performance. It is: the Lord knows the ones who are His.
You are standing on a foundation that stands whether or not you can lift anything. That is not a soft word for a hard eleven weeks. It is what is written in 2 Timothy 2, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a written line and sets it under a man on a porch step. The back is a back. The foundation is God's.
And look at the seal, because it is the part aimed straight at a man who has been useful with his body since he was seventeen. The Lord knoweth them that are his. Knows. Not employs. Not deploys. The proof of belonging in that verse is a knowledge God has, and it makes no reference at all to what the person can carry.
You have been known by God since long before your back was ever any good, and the knowing did not go on the Tuesday. 2 Timothy 2:19 is the line it rests on, and His Spirit is the one who makes an old prison letter land on a front step in the evening.
Nobody is being told he was wrong
Now the thing this category exists to protect, and it goes first because everything else depends on it.
He is not in trouble for having relied on his own strength. A man whose body is the family's resource does not sit down one day and decide to make it his foundation. It happens because it works, for decades, and because every time somebody needed something heavy moved he could do it, and the doing was love and not pride.
I want to say the true thing about what is being lost, because reframing it would be an insult.
What has gone is not only a capacity. It is a way of loving people. Lifting was how he said things he has never said with words. Showing up with a truck was I love you. Doing most of the stairs was you matter to me. Take that away and a man is not merely limited, he is mute in the only language he was fluent in, and that is a real bereavement and nobody around him has named it.
My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever.Psalm 73:26
That psalmist does not deny the failing. He says it flatly, in the same sentence, and then names something that did not fail alongside it.
You were given a strength that is not located in your flesh, and the psalm says so in the same breath as the failing. Psalm 73:26 is the text this sits on, and it is the Spirit who lets a man say both halves of that sentence out loud without one of them being a lie.
You are held right now, eleven weeks in, with the scan saying what it says. It is written that the foundation of God stands sure and that He knows those who are His, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that true in a body that has not lifted anything since a Tuesday in the spring.
If any of this ever turns dangerous, and staying safe genuinely comes into question, call or text a crisis line where you live, 988 in the United States, and tell a doctor or a counselor the plain truth about the nights. Being on a foundation that stands sure has never been a reason for a strong man to sit alone with something that needs a person in the room.
Here is the turn, and it is not optimism about the scan. It is weight changing hands, and it happens on a porch step.
For thirty years the arrangement has been: I am solid because I can carry it. Tonight the order reverses. The foundation of God stands sure, and it was standing under him through every double shift and every set of stairs, and the back goes back to being what it always was: a good back, for a while, that did real work and was never the ground.
You are established tonight, on this step, with a body that will not do what it did in March. This is not me putting a kind opinion over anybody. Second Timothy 2:19 puts the standing on God's foundation and the seal on His knowing, and it is the Spirit of God who takes a written thing and makes it a standing thing in a person.
And here is what changes tomorrow, and it is not small. A man who is not standing on his own body can be in the room where something heavy is happening. He can direct. He can hold the flashlight. He can tell a nephew which bolt. He can say out loud to his cousins that this is hard, which he has never done once in twenty years. You have a place in that family that your back was never issuing, and it is not being withdrawn. The written word says the Lord knows those who are His, and it is His Spirit who makes that true in a man eleven weeks into not being able.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, feet flat on the floor. Not silently. The authority to speak to what stands in the way is not yours by nature and never was: it is written that you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the authority is His, delegated, carried in His name, and the Holy Spirit carries the word rather than the volume of your voice. What you speak to tonight is not the scan and not the physical therapist, because they are telling the truth and you have no authority over any of it. What you speak to is the sentence that says a man who cannot lift has nothing to give. Whatever He does with the back is His to do, and you leave the outcome with Him. What is under you is not up for negotiation.
- Back that gave out, you are a body part I have relied on, and you were never the foundation of God. Second Timothy 2:19 says the foundation of God stands sure and He knows those who are His, and it was standing through every set of stairs I ever carried.
- Sentence that says I have nothing to give now, you have run eleven weeks of my evenings, and tonight you are evicted in the name of Jesus. The Holy Spirit is the one who steadies me, and it is written that my flesh and my heart fail but God is the strength of my heart.
- Lord, You are the foundation that stands sure and the One who knows His own, as it is written, and I thank You that Your seal on me has never once mentioned what I can lift. There is a room tomorrow with something heavy in it and a place for me in it, and taking that place is what I am doing.
2 Timothy 2:19
